Why we choose The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island

A seaside mansion with genuine southern hospitality

  • The adults-only infinity oceanfront pool makes for splash-free relaxing
  • Play a round or three on the five championship golf courses
  • Explore the island for the afternoon with the hotel’s Mercedes

When it comes to location, service and sheer number of incredible activities, there’s really no competition on the Southeastern coast. But feel free to look if you don’t believe us. Some of the Sanctuary’s well-deserved hype includes its distinction as the #1 Resort in the U.S., as voted by Golf World Magazine readers—a fine endorsement, indeed. What doesn’t get as much publicity is the beach, which you’ll undoubtedly agree is fantastic.

What you need to know about the hotel

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort looks like something out of the 1800s—but with exceptional modern luxuries

  • Golf gets the love, but tennis enthusiasts will find 19 Har-Tru and five hard tennis courts, plus two tennis learning centers
  • The five-star, five-diamond spa—one of only 13 in North America—delivers innovative therapies, wellness coaching and fitness classes
  • The resort contacts every guest prior to arrival to become familiar with their needs and preferences, creating a more perfect stay

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is designed to look like you’ve stepped into a third-generation plantation—right down to the hotel art, which is mostly from the 1800s. Definitely not centuries old are the posh facilities and 255 luxurious rooms and suites. The Club Level rooms are particularly memorable, as they come with a private concierge and elite lounge with four meal and cocktail presentations every day.

The resort has won pages of awards for everything from their tennis offerings to their family-friendly environment. But with “golf” in its name, you won’t be surprised to find it the focus here. They have five championship courses, including The Ocean Course, host of the 2012 PGA Championship. And if you need a little help with your swing, book some time in the Golf Learning Center. Golf not your thing? There’s still plenty to keep you occupied, such as pools for families and adults and seven spectacular dining options. Hint: Fine dining eatery The Ocean Room is known for beef (it’s the only steakhouse in the U.S. to earn both Forbes 4 Star and AAA 4 Diamond ratings), but try the South-meets-East menu at its niche Sushi Lounge.

Where is it and what's nearby

A unique island resort that’s more plantation-chic than tropical-kitschy

  • Feel like a tour pro by grabbing a caddy and playing 18 holes on The Ocean Course
  • Kiawah is nature central, and photography buffs won’t want to miss the nature photography walking tour
  • Nearby Charleston offers an inside peek at real plantations, giving you three centuries’ worth of history in an afternoon

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is located on a barrier island a few miles from historic Charleston, South Carolina. Its oceanfront setting and 10-mile private beach are the perfect preview of the island’s stunning natural beauty. In fact, the natural world is a huge focus here, so outdoor lovers who want a break from golf and tennis can visit the Heron Park Nature Center, take in some back island birding, go on a loggerhead crawl, take a butterfly walk and much more.

How to enjoy South Carolina

With southern charm in spades and more (well-preserved) history than you shake a stick at, South Carolina’s allure is impossible to resist. Do prepare to downshift a bit; things here move at a pace that allows you to thoroughly enjoy every moment

  • Charleston’s King Street is an antique hunter’s paradise, full of chic shops stocking the good stuff: pieces that would be at home in museums
  • Hilton Head has so many resorts, in part, because of its wealth of stunning beaches. More than 10 miles of tree-lined white sand awaits
  • Beaufort’s magical aura makes it a popular Silver Screen backdrop—especially its opulent, centuries-old antebellum houses

Good luck deciding on a South Carolina home base. For pure charisma, Charleston’s picturesque landscape is unbeatable—especially the scenic Battery, lined with lush parks and glorious mansions. And legendary Hilton Head island is synonymous with a lavish good time.

You’ll find that food is your constant companion on your South Carolina voyage. We could fill 1,000 pages with simpering testimonials about the restaurants, but it’s safe to say that some of the best dining in the country can be found here, particularly in Charleston. Some of our favorites include the Charleston Grill (French), Anson (Southern) and Red Drum (haute pub).

    When to visit South Carolina

Ooh boy, does the temperature soar in the summer! There’s only so much a glass of sweet iced tea can do to offset the hot, sticky mess, so if you’re not a heat lover, opt for any other season—the rest are lovely and mild.

  • We say

The best hotel on Kiawah Island.

  • A word from the hotel

In our premier dining room, The Ocean Room, I recommend the Sanctuary Chop, which is a two-pound, bone-in ribeye for two.
    Ryley McGillis, Executive Chef

  • Must do

Have a drink in the Atlantic Room overlooking the Ocean Course and the ocean beyond.

  • Awards and accolades

The Spa at the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island makes Best Spa lists again and again. In 2012 it was listed in the Top 100 Resort Spas in the US by Condé Nast Traveler, in 2011 it was ranked #11 in the Best Hotel Spas in America by Travel + Leisure and it is a Forbes 5 Star Spa.
