Why we choose Andaz 5th Avenue

Andaz 5th Avenue is modern Manhattan sophistication with a (rare) landscaped courtyard

  • In-room spa treatments bring the “ahh” to you
  • Complimentary in-room mini-bar includes organic juice, water and healthy snacks
  • Some of the largest guestrooms in New York City

The idea at Andaz 5th Avenue is uncomplicated but personal service which begins the moment you arrive. When you walk through the doors, you don’t line up in front of a giant desk with dozens of other people. After you’re greeted, you can sip on a welcome drink in the lounge (which takes the place of an impersonal lobby) while you’re checked in or go straight to your room and check in via handheld device. This laid-back, “as you like it” approach is refreshing when visiting go-go-go New York.

What you need to know about the hotel

An upscale boutique that’s staffed by people who are passionate about New York City

  • The Andaz Extra Large Terrace Suite has a wrap-around terrace, two oversized bathrooms, Geneva Sound Systems with iPod docking and multiple flat-screen TVs
  • Talk to the chef while he’s cooking in the open kitchen of The Bar Downstairs, which serves seasonal cocktails and shared plates
  • The hotel’s artwork—including 14-foot acrylic murals and an eight-foot-high marble and resin Nick Hornby sculpture—reflects the area’s dynamics

Andaz 5th Avenue’s 184 loft-style rooms and suites start at a generous 322 square feet and boast 12-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the hotel’s landscaped courtyard and NYC sights. The feeling is very “pre-war apartment,” but the amenities are oh-so-modern and include travertine marble bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and porcelain foot baths. Opt for one of the 42 deluxe suites if you want a private balcony or landscaped terrace.

The list of facilities is short and sweet—and darn good. The restaurant (The Shop) is a fresh seasonal eatery, while the upscale tapas bar (The Bar Downstairs) has an appealing communal vibe. There’s also a 24-hour gym with Life Fitness equipment featuring LCD virtual trainers and iPod connectivity.

Where is it and what's nearby

Located on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, a famous shopping mecca and cultural hub

  • The New York Public Library, which doubles as a Beaux Arts architectural masterpiece and art repository, is best appreciated via guided tour
  • Midtown Manhattan’s very own greenspace, Bryant Park, offers pretty gardens and walking paths and becomes a scenic lunch spot at midday
  • Neon sign-filled Times Square is known for its New Year’s extravaganzas, but theatergoers, shoppers and families make it excitingly frenetic every day

Andaz 5th Avenue is located in the stylish Bryant Park area of Midtown Manhattan, known for a decade as the host of New York’s Fashion Week. The hotel, which is across from Bryant Park and the New York Public Library, is within walking distance of celebrated Firth Avenue shopping, Times Square and Rockefeller Center. It’s also near big-time draws like the Theater District, Grand Central Station, the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center. The neighborhood is one of the most walkable in a famously walkable city, allowing you to pick your way through the international food trucks that cram the area during mealtimes.

How to enjoy New York City

Granite foundations let Manhattan soar into one of the great cities of the world. A crossroads that has welcomed new arrivals for centuries, but now is more at ease showing its softer side, but only for a ’New York Minute’ mind

  • Food, in every wonderful flavor and from every corner of the world, from early morning right through to, well, early morning
  • Nightlife that is second to none, from dancing Mormons on Broadway; to Knicks at The Garden; to Placido at The Met
  • Serious shopping to fit every budget and every style. From Tiffany & Co and the big guys on 5th to the flea markets of Brooklyn

The Big Apple is awash with ‘must-sees’ and can cater for literally every taste. You could marvel at a Matisse at MoMA, get down and dizzy at the Guggenheim’s famed spiraling architecture, take a superhero tour of movie locations and enjoy 360° views of the city from the Rockefeller Center’s observation deck. Perhaps the most moving, however, is the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero.

For quintessential New York try a 6th Avenue bagel before people watching over a skinny latte in the West Village. Stock up on the latest must-have Manolo Blahniks in Manhattan’s midtown before toasting Carrie’s health over lunch at Eleven Madison Park. It’s the restaurant where the Sex and the City character’s heart is broken; remember to reserve well in advance to avoid your own fully-booked heartache.
