Why we choose Canyon Ranch Lenox

Canyon Ranch health resort offers a classic spa setting, where bliss meets fitness

  • Living, dining and activity areas connect via glass-enclosed, climate-controlled walkways
  • Choose from over 40 indoor fitness classes every day
  • Hands-on cooking classes and demonstrations help you take newfound knowledge home

Like others in the brand, the Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Mass., is a wellness resort. So in addition to the usual cooks, concierges and reception staff, they also employ physicians, counselors, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, art and music therapists—essentially, every pro imaginable to help you get (or stay) in top shape, both mentally and physically.

What you need to know about the hotel

Canyon Ranch is the ultimate spa vacation—the only 11-time winner of the Condé Nast Traveler Best Destination Spa Award

  • Both pools have a natural chlorination process that eliminates the usual odor, itchy eyes and dry skin associated with chlorine
  • The 100,000-square-foot spa includes five gyms; indoor tennis, racquetball, basketball and squash courts; pool, track and treatment rooms
  • Have fun with metaphysical consultations like astrology, tarot card readings, numerology, feng shui, handwriting analysis and clairvoyant readings

Canyon Ranch famously pioneered the idea of an integrated health-based vacation. Centered around the elegant Bellefontaine Mansion, built in 1897, the upscale Lenox branch is all-inclusive hotel and spa with plenty of New England charm.

Though the rooms and suites are comfortable—they include indulgences like Italian linens—they’re not the focus. Rather, Canyon Ranch is all about the wellness offerings. There’s lots of outdoor acreage for hiking and snow sports, as well as massive indoor facilities for fitness classes, spa treatments, nutrition and health consultations and dining on gourmet (light) fare.

Whether you need help losing weight, managing your life, connecting with your spiritual side or are interested in complementary medicine, Canyon Ranch has a specialist on staff for whatever ails you.

Where is it and what's nearby

The hotel is situated on 120 acres in the picturesque Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts

  • The Normal Rockwell Museum in nearby Stockbridge provides a peek inside the work of the famous Berkshire painter
  • You’ll never run out of adventures, thanks to the rope challenge course and miles of walking, hiking, biking and cross-country trails
  • Culture alert: Berkshires are part-time home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Daniel Chester French Estate, where he designed the Lincoln Memorial

Lenox, Massachusetts, is really the ideal location for a health resort because it’s in the heart of the wooded Berkshires. After all, why run around an indoor track when you can hike glorious trails dotted with New England flora and fauna? The resort is also within walking distance of the lovely, highly artistic town of Lenox, which offers a surprising number of interesting museums and historic sites. You’ll soon understand why painters such as Saturday Evening Post cover artist Normal Rockwell and writers from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Herman Melville have been inspired by this area for centuries.

How to enjoy Rest of New England

New England symbolizes the very essence of America. After all, this is where America got its start. And while this sense of history remains, the region’s diverse landscapes and slew of attractions makes it tough to pick just one itinerary

  • Hop a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard—off Cape Cod—for a day of upscale shopping, great food and maybe a celeb sighting (musicians love it)
  • A drive through Newport, R.I.’s spectacular oceanfront mansions is a reminder that the Vanderbilts were once very much at home here
  • Maine’s Acadia National Park is actually rife with amazing ocean views; Park Loop Road includes ridges, rocky shores and crashing surf

New England is a collection of six states that shares a history and a no-nonsense philosophy—but not much else. Here, you’ll find everything from cosmopolitan cities to coastal resort areas to charming country sides. Bustling cities like historic Boston, Mass., and booming Providence, R.I., offer urban bliss, while traditionally posh areas like Cape Cod and Newport, R.I., are glamorous retreats.

If the outdoors is calling, try a hike in Vermont’s Green Mountains or New Hampshire’s White Mountains—or exploring Western Massachusetts’ Berkshires area, with rolling hills, quaint villages and antiques shops. And while New England isn’t known for its cuisine, there are a few exceptions—notably Maine lobster, pizza from New Haven, Conn., and Vermont maple syrup. Oh, and quahog clams from anywhere.

When to visit Rest of New England

New England is famous for its harsh winters, so unless you’re a cross-country skier, you may want to pick another season. Late spring is very pretty (though muddy), but summer and fall are the winners—as the seasons’ hordes of tourists can attest. If you’ve never been, a “fall color tour” to view the gorgeous autumn leaves is a must.
