Why we choose The Modern Honolulu

The goal: Set a new standard for lifestyle hotels. Mission accomplished

  • Eat at Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s seafood restaurant
  • Daily sorbet and quick massage services at poolside
  • Unique underwater sound system in the saltwater Sunrise Pool

It takes a lot to impress us, but the Modern Honolulu managed to do just that. Whatever you’re looking for—unless that’s butler service and high tea—can be found in this stylish newbie. With everything they’ve got up their sleeves, it would be almost understandable for staffers to cop an attitude, but the Modern piles on the service and not the bull.

What you need to know about the hotel

This innovative urban resort gives off a sophisticated yet laid-back vibe that’s perfect for trendy, in-the-know visitors

  • Enter the raw ADDICTION Nightclub through a discreet entrance and enjoy a 30-foot-long bar and elevated VIP section
  • The 18+ Sunset Pool and Bar brings the beach to you with a beachscape created from 100 tons of imported sand
  • Bigger than some homes, the Waikiki Penthouse features 1,400 square feet of custom-furnished space and a 1,500-square-foot wraparound landscaped terrace

The hotel isn’t right on the beach, but it’s within a short walking distance.

Heralded as a fresh new face in Waikiki, the MODERN has a fresh vibe that, not surprisingly, attracts a fairly young crowd—or at least those who are young at heart. There’s huge emphasis placed on dining (they scored über-chef Masaharu Morimoto’s first Hawaiian restaurant) and nightlife. Like the rest of the hotel, the 353 rooms and suites feature sophisticated technology carefully hidden behind a posh design.

The hotel’s resort-worthy amenities include a small but lovely spa, fitness center and two noteworthy pools—one that’s adults only. Dive right in!

Rooms facing the ocean are our first choice.

Where is it and what's nearby

Waikiki is the Disneyland of Hawaii, with plenty of things to keep you busy, as well as gorgeous do-nothing beaches

  • Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the U.S., recounts the history of Hawaii and its royal dynasty
  • The North Shore is a famous surfing mecca, but it also offers fruit stands, shrimp farms and agricultural tours
  • Hike up Diamond Head, an extinct volcano crater, for a 360-degree view of the island and the Pacific

Oahu is the busiest of the Hawaiian islands, with an endless list of things to see and do—that is, if you’re interested in more than sitting on pristine beaches sipping mai tais. The MODERN Honolulu is located at the entrance of Waikiki, an area so beautiful that it was once a retreat for Hawaii’s royal family. Today, Waikiki is among the most popular surfing destinations in the world. But if catching a wave isn’t on your to-do list, never fear; there’s also great shopping, natural wonders like Diamond Head and family attractions such as the Waikiki Aquarium. Pack your sunscreen because most activities and attractions are outdoors. And why not, if you’ve got year-round weather perfection?

How to enjoy

From the wave-top acrobatics of surf dudes and divas, to the brooding majesty of Diamond Head, Oahu’s sights are as varied as they are breathtaking

  • Sink your toes into the soft sand of Waimea Bay and watch the pro-surfers glide effortlessly out of the barrels of cresting waves
  • Visit the museums and memorials that pay homage to the 2,390 people who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941
  • Brace yourself against the howling winds of the Nuuanu Pali Lookout; the view is totally worth a bit of buffeting

Oahu is home to a state capital unlike any other in the US. At every turn in Honolulu, the island’s amazing scenery reminds you of paradise. A cluster of city high rises may try dominate Honolulu’s foreground, but these shrink to insignificance in the shadow of the soaring green peaks of the Koolau Mountain Range. Vibrant nightspots light up the night; by day, turquoise waters gently lap the city’s beaches.

It seems everyone who hails from Hawaii can surf: from singer-songwriter Jack Johnson (former pro-surfer), to President Barack Obama (keen body surfer). Sign up for lessons at a booth on Waikiki Beach. For a more soothing pastime, charter a yacht for picnics in secluded bays and opportunities for whale watching or swimming with dolphins.

    When to visit

The world’s major surfing competitions take place off the island’s North Shore between November and December. Check out surfing’s equivalent of the Super Bowl, Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

  • We say

A fresh new face in Waikiki.

  • You need to know

The resort isn’t oceanfront. It’s a few minutes walk to the beach.
