How to enjoy Hawaii (Island)

Cascading waterfalls, erupting volcanoes, lush valleys, beautiful beaches of pure white or jet-black sand – there’s no other place like it on earth

  • Let your gaze settle on the blue horizon as you float effortlessly in an infinity-edged pool
  • Rent a deep-sea charter in Honokohau Harbor and go big game sport fishing for Marlin and Mahimahi
  • One of the world’s best locations for stargazing: go to the Visitor Information Station of the Mauna Kea Observatory for world class telescopes

Also known as Big Island, Hawaii is the largest of the six islands that make up the State of Hawaii and boasts everything from sandy beaches to snowcapped mountains and active volcanoes. In fact, it is one of the few places on earth where non-volcanologists can actually explore a live volcano: watch the molten lava solidify in a hiss of steam as it reaches the sea and creates new land.

If your thing is Java rather than lava, head to Kona. Connoisseurs rate it among the world’s best coffee and many of the region’s coffee farms offer tours and tasting. For exquisite golf, challenge your handicap on courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Robert Trent Jones Sr and Jr. Pristine white bunkers sit among emerald fairways, nestling between black lava flows and the clear blue sea.
