Why we choose Delano South Beach

This self-contained South Beach resort is a unique beachside escape

  • Watch TV or get a spa treatment in a private poolside cabana
  • The subterranean FDR at Delano has critically-acclaimed cocktails and international music acts
  • The indoor/outdoor lobby is a seamless transition between inside and out

The Delano is a trendy designer hotel on the ocean that caters to people who have everything. With this target market, they (not surprisingly) have a top-notch level of service in the vein of, “Anything you can dream, we can deliver.” And in anything-goes South Beach, that’s saying a lot. So if you crave a spot in the hip, young Miami crowd, the Delano has proven itself worthy of your time and money.

What you need to know about the hotel

The Delano is an icon on Miami Beach, with a reputation for both service and style

  • The penthouse-level Agua Spa has a rooftop solarium and an Indian-inspired KeSARI treatment menu
  • The sleek Media Room features plush leather couches for up to 20 people and built-in credenzas for food and beverage service
  • Hugely popular private poolside bungalows offer custom furnishings, an exclusive patio, rainfall showers and a Roman-inspired marble soaking tub

Built in 1939, the Delano is an Art Deco gem—a 194-room urban resort that specializes in non-subtle luxury. The property has a distinctly village-like feel thanks to a separate-but-connected design created to help the resort’s nine areas flow. Keep your eye out for the international collection of furniture and items from renowned artists such as Antonio Gaudi, Man Ray, Charles and Ray Eames, Salvador Dali and Mark Newson. One drawback: Some of the rooms are on the small side, so upgrade to a suite or poolside bungalow.

There are two restaurants featuring international flavors, three bars with buzzed-about cocktails, a spa and a fitness center. But the biggest attraction is the Delano Beach Club, a refined seaside retreat with a garden path leading straight to the resort’s iconic swimming pool and the ocean. Of course, spectacular service is part of the experience, with casual poolside dining, daybeds, chaise lounges and private cabanas.

Where is it and what's nearby

The oceanfront Delano is located in the heart of South Beach’s vibrant scene

  • Miami’s Wynwood Arts District is a funky-cool area full of galleries, studios and hip restaurants and lounges
  • Tour the city’s diverse architecture via boat for divine views of everything from century-old grand dames to city icons like the Fontainebleau
  • The Design District is a heavenly destination for well-heeled locals and tourists to browse interior design, art and furniture boutiques

The Delano is situated beachside in Miami’s legendary South Beach area, close to everything worth doing in Miami Beach. Set up a beach chair just steps from the hotel, dive into the ocean with a variety of water sports and let the kids place in the tented, toy-stocked children’s play area. If you want a more interesting—and possibly scandalous—beach experience, pick a spot on nearby Lummus Park Beach along Ocean Drive, where tops are optional and celebs are frequent visitors.

Miami is known for its shopping and nightlife, but you can also take a side trip to alligator country in the Everglades, hit the links, watch playful manatees on the waterfront, scuba dive or take in galleries and art museums.

How to enjoy Miami

From its young, hot artists, to its classic Art Deco-lined boulevards and Latin-flavored party life, Miami’s glamorous and stylish culture never fails to dazzle

  • From live jazz bars, to chi chi restaurants, cool groove clubs and boat parties, Miami’s nightlife sizzles from sundown
  • For a slower pace and effortless elegance, kick back and soak up the sweet chic that is South Beach’s triangular corner, SoFi
  • Take a stroll between 5th Street and Dade Boulevard to explore the city’s renowned candy-colored Art Deco scene

With miles of pristine white sands, a sparkling turquoise sea and haughty palm trees with fronds that whisper in the wind, Miami is undoubtedly a beach city. However, sun, sand and sea are only part of the story. Miami’s rich cultural heritage is embedded in art, money and a healthy dose of Latin passion.

Having long been the winter playground of the rich and famous, Miami drops big names as casually as its state flower, Orange Blossom, loses petals. Gianni Versace, Gloria Estefan, Lenny Kravitz, Oprah Winfrey have all lived here. The new kids on the block are the artists. Be sure to check out some galleries while you are here; you may just discover the next big thing.

The fact that Philippe Starck has placed work by Man Ray around the hotel is a winner for me every time. more >
