Why we choose The Peninsula Chicago

The big city hotel the others measure themselves against

  • Frequently acknowledged as the #1 ‘Large City Hotel’ in North America
  • The staff here are really on the ball, even before you arrive
  • A sensational location steps from Chicago’s best shopping

The Peninsula is a five-star luxury hotel that doesn’t pretend to cater to anyone but discerning travelers. The hotel’s elite chefs will teach your kid to cook, for heaven’s sake. Still, they’ve got the Midwestern hospitality part down and can offer guests absolutely anything their hearts desire. And if high-end retailers make you giddy, you can’t beat the location among the glitziest stores in town.

We suggest

When you book a suite, you’ll enjoy chauffeured use of a Peninsula Mini Cooper for up to three hours (subject to availability).

What you need to know about the hotel

The Peninsula’s approach: Eastern elegance meets Midwestern hospitality.

  • We can’t get enough of the Peninsula Academy’s offerings: private sessions in cooking, hosting a Chinese tea ceremony and more
  • The spa continually wins awards for its holistic approach to wellness and state-of-the-art everything
  • Go cocoa crazy at the Chocolate Bar, available on weekends in The Lobby restaurant

The hotel is on the top floors of a high-rise building, rather than occupying its own building. You take an elevator to the lobby.

Throughout the Peninsula is a surprisingly successful blend of Midwestern, Asian and European influence; the three restaurants are a perfect illustration. The building’s classical façade recalls the Art Deco design of Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive in the 1920s and 1930s. The interior has a decidedly European flair that extends to the 339 rooms—all of which are scrumptious, a rare feat.

You know the amenities are outstanding when they attract a city-wide clientele. That’s certainly the case with the magnificent spa and the three critically acclaimed restaurants. But only guests get access to Peninsula Academy programs like a behind-the-scenes experience at fabulous design center Merchandise Mart.

Where is it and what's nearby

If location is everything, the Peninsula may be the best hotel in the city.

  • Downtown Chicago’s Grant Park is a huge urban oasis and home of an outdoor classical music series in the summer
  • Don’t miss the city’s acclaimed museums, especially the Art Institute and Field Museum
  • Chicago’s famous deep dish pizza is worth a splurge. Try Pizzeria Uno (where it was invented) or local fave Lou Malnati’s

The Peninsula is situated on Water Tower Park in Chicago’s “Magnificent Mile,” an upscale area that’s best known as a shopper’s paradise. The always-busy sidewalks are plenty wide and dotted with flowerbeds, adding a touch of greenery to this urban jungle. Some of the most interesting architecture in the city provides lots to gape at during retail therapy.

Greater Chicago offers endless possibilities for both day and night. It’s a huge sports town, so fans can take in a professional baseball, hockey, football or basketball game year round. Arts enthusiasts should make plans to attend one of the city’s celebrated theatres or music halls. And whether you’re traveling with kids or not, consider a trip to the entertainment complex known as Navy Pier—admittedly a bit touristy, but worth checking out for its history alone.

How to enjoy Chicago

With major league Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs and White Sox all based here, there’s plenty to keep even the most avid sports fan happy. For authentic Chicago, grab a deep pan pizza before heading to one of the city’s many blues bars.

  • Step out onto The Ledge of the Willis Tower Skydeck for a vertiginous thrill or charter a helicopter for an unforgettable skyline tour
  • Head to Navy Pier to catch a cruise on Lake Michigan or play among the lakeside attractions
  • Browse the indie bookstores and boutiques of Wicker Park, or sample the mouth-watering menus of the neighborhood’s many excellent restaurants

There’s something exciting about approaching the Windy City for the first time. You can feel a spine tingle of anticipation as you drive in and see the skyscrapers slowly emerging from the previously uninterrupted horizon. Or if flying to O’Hare or Midway, we defy you not to feel a frisson of thrill as you spot the Willis Tower, tall and aloof among the cluster of shorter buildings.

The skyline is a given on your must see list and can be enjoyed in many ways. But Chicago is much more than a bunch of tall buildings anchored in the Midwest. Nestled on the southern shores of Lake Michigan, President Obama’s home town is packed with cultural highlights with world class museums, theatres, ballet, orchestra, sport and, of course, blues.
