Why we choose Viceroy Santa Monica

An urban retreat at the shore, the Viceroy is a unique luxury beach boutique

  • Settle in with a glass of Champagne upon arrival
  • In-room Beauty Bars feature full-sized spa products
  • Maintain your balance with yoga on Saturday and Sunday mornings

The Viceroy Santa Monica is a lot like its Southern California location: sleek and cosmopolitan yet with a relaxed, beachy vibe. It’s modern in appearance and appointments, with the latest technology in the guestrooms, but it also has an appealingly softer side in elements like Cameo Lounge, a retro-glam bar that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into “that” episode of Mad Men.

Grand View Oceanfront Rooms are the best; the higher the better.

What you need to know about the hotel

Innovative design and sand-filled sophistication are the hallmarks of the Viceroy Santa Monica

  • Whist restaurant offers a globally-influenced menu with a California eco-chic approach to using ingredients from local markets and farms
  • The two outdoor heated plunge pools do double duty, as they’re covered with dance floors during the cooler months

The Viceroy Santa Monica is a little bit of everything, design-wise: British Regency-inspired interior, modern exterior and mid-century lounge area. For whatever reason, the unexpected mash up works.

The 167 sophisticated rooms and suites are comfortable combinations of Egyptian cotton bed linens and high-tech wonders like all-in-one Media Hub systems and flat-screen TVs. Among the facilities is a back patio with two heated pools, poolside cabanas, dining cabanas and restaurant seating.

Where is it and what's nearby

A modern boutique hotel located in the heart of vibrant Santa Monica

  • Bike to lively Venice Boardwalk, filled with sometimes-eccentric locals, street performers, indie shops, and fun dining destinations
  • Santa Monica Pier is a Southern California landmark, famous for its solar-powered Ferris wheel (the world’s only), carousel, carnival games and rollercoaster
  • Rodeo Drive in nearby Beverly Hills is shopping nirvana, with upscale boutiques like Dior, Gucci, Chanel and Prada

Viceroy Santa Monica is one block from the beach in sun-drenched Southern California, offering you postcard-perfect scenery and great access to the water. It’s also near some of the area’s biggest draws, including Hollywood, world-class museums, galleries, haute couture shopping and championship golf courses. Santa Monica has truly become the go-to West Coast destination for a unique mix of entertainment, arts and fun attractions—and the Viceroy puts you in perfect position to discover it all.

How to enjoy Los Angeles Coast

It’s impossible to escape from the glamor of LA, even the city’s beaches seem to be populated with beautiful people. Maybe because the sea air adds a touch of oxygen, but LA’s Pacific Seaboard offers a refreshing break from downtown

  • Rent a convertible and head out to Route 1 for a spectacular, hair-blown trip along the Pacific Palisades
  • Take some surf lessons at one of Malibu’s perfect white sand beaches, the lifeguards alone are worth it
  • Enjoy the carnival of humanity that is Venice Beach, from street performers to boardwalk skaters, it is everything you imagine and more

If you can bear to tear yourself away from Malibu, with its picture perfect beaches, homes and healthful restaurants, take a trip up Topanga Canyon. The drive itself is beautiful with a winding road and picturesque cliffs, but a treat lies in store at the end with the Topanga Overlook. Hike to the lookout point for panoramic ocean views with the streets and LA stretching out into the distance below.

The beach life from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach feels a world away from Malibu – with more emphasis on fun and less on elegance. And perhaps that is the best thing about the LA coast; there is something for everyone. Whether it is working out at the original Muscle Beach (you have to see it to believe it), catching the surf of El Porto (not pretty, but great breaks), riding more waves at Surfrider (there’s a clue in the name), or just chilling with the kids at Zuma or Point Dume.

  • You need to know

    It’s valet parking only here.

  • A word from the hotel

One of my favorite things to do during the day is drive out to Malibu for lunch or cocktails at Geoffrey’s followed by a day at El Matador Beach.

  • A word from the hotel

Since we are one block from the beach I love to take an after work run up the coast. The scenery is from postcards, The Santa Monica Pier and the sun setting towards Malibu behind the silhouettes of the Life Guard Stations, it’s paradise, truly the best way to unwind after a long day at work.
