Why we choose Terranea Resort

This southern California resort is a tranquil, natural escape that seems a million miles away from the city

  • Cielo Point is an adults-only pool located cliffside
  • Swing away at The Links at Terranea, an award-winning nine-hole golf course
  • Nelson’s, a cliff’s-edge restaurant and bar, is perfect for whale watching

The goal of the meticulously designed Terranea Resort is to spotlight the natural beauty of its oceanfront environment, and, in doing so, give coastal California visitors a taste of the Mediterranean aesthetic.

This European-meets-SoCal flavor makes it seem very far removed from, well, everything. But it’s actually within an hour of Hollywood—which may be why it’s served as a backdrop for films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Batman and Pearl Harbor.

What you need to know about the hotel

Terranea has the feel of a carefully tended coastal estate allowed to evolve naturally over time

  • The Spa at Terranea features 50,000 square feet of seaside bliss, with 25 treatment rooms and private relaxation areas
  • Perched high above the bluffs, the Vanderlip Suite delivers dramatic views, opulent furnishings and entertaining-friendly amenities like a pantry and separate entry
  • Above-and-beyond services include personal shopping to stock your fridge or mini-bar and a Pointe Discovery activity concierge to coordinate adventure experiences

Though it was built in 2009, Terranea Resort has an old-world ambience that’s perfectly at home in the Mediterranean-like Palos Verdes Peninsula. Here you’ll find expansive gardens, private terraces and inviting courtyards with outdoor fireplaces. The 582 rooms are divided between a main building and residential-style accommodations including 20 bungalows, 50 casitas and 32 villas. Note that the casitas can be a walk from the main hotel—a bonus for some and an annoyance for others.

The property boasts a long list of facilities—eight restaurants and lounges, an oceanfront golf course, destination spa, onsite boutiques and what seems like a thousand outdoor adventures. There are also three heated outdoor swimming pools: the main resort pool with a 140-foot waterslide and kids’ splash area, the adults-only Cielo Point and the relaxing Spa Pool.

Where is it and what's nearby

Terranea is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island

  • The resort’s Discovery Trail connects miles of coastal trails and provides education on indigenous plants and wildlife through naturalist-guided tours and interpretive signage
  • About 1,000 gray whales migrate annually near Terranea, and guests can participate in the whale count through a volunteer program
  • Terranea’s oceanfront locale creates lots of water-based fun—from coastal fishing to painting by the sea to scuba diving and surfing

Located on 102 prime oceanfront acres, Terranea is part of a scenic southern California coastline with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. It sprawls over the former Marineland of the Pacific, which planted scores of trees half a century ago that have now grown into mature—and magnificent—native plantings that add to the sense of wonder here. This other-worldly beauty is the source of many unique opportunities in and around the resort, such as falconry, preserve hiking and horseback riding.

Alternatively, Terranea is a mere half hour from the Los Angeles airport and not much farther from prime destinations like Disneyland, Universal Studios, Beverly Hills and Hollywood. You can answer the call of the wild in the morning and then duck into Rodeo Drive boutiques that afternoon.

How to enjoy Los Angeles Coast

It’s impossible to escape from the glamor of LA, even the city’s beaches seem to be populated with beautiful people. Maybe because the sea air adds a touch of oxygen, but LA’s Pacific Seaboard offers a refreshing break from downtown

  • Rent a convertible and head out to Route 1 for a spectacular, hair-blown trip along the Pacific Palisades
  • Take some surf lessons at one of Malibu’s perfect white sand beaches, the lifeguards alone are worth it
  • Enjoy the carnival of humanity that is Venice Beach, from street performers to boardwalk skaters, it is everything you imagine and more

If you can bear to tear yourself away from Malibu, with its picture perfect beaches, homes and healthful restaurants, take a trip up Topanga Canyon. The drive itself is beautiful with a winding road and picturesque cliffs, but a treat lies in store at the end with the Topanga Overlook. Hike to the lookout point for panoramic ocean views with the streets and LA stretching out into the distance below.

The beach life from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach feels a world away from Malibu – with more emphasis on fun and less on elegance. And perhaps that is the best thing about the LA coast; there is something for everyone. Whether it is working out at the original Muscle Beach (you have to see it to believe it), catching the surf of El Porto (not pretty, but great breaks), riding more waves at Surfrider (there’s a clue in the name), or just chilling with the kids at Zuma or Point Dume.

Our unique coastal setting offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to spot California Gray Whales, Harbor Seals and even the endangered El Segundo Blue Butterfly.

One of my favorite things to do a Terranea is enjoy the fish tacos at Nelsons paired with a local beer while watching the sun set over the Pacific.
