Why we choose Montage Laguna Beach

With its bluff setting, jaw-dropping Ocean views, and unique California Arts and Crafts architecture, Montage Laguna Beach is a Southern California eden that we love.

  • It’s always safe to play room roulette: All have stunning ocean views
  • The huge oceanfront spa is reason enough for a visit
  • Our repeat guests attest to the fantastic staff at this resort

We adore the area’s laid back vibe, especially because this chic hotel doesn’t skimp on service.

Only Southern California would offer you an ’interactive cheese bar’ with a straight face. But if you’re serious about your cheese then head to The Loft and sample their incredible selection. Who knew that Dallas produces goat’s cheese?

What you need to know about the hotel

Come for the intoxicating Pacific views and personalized service; stay for the award-winning oceanfront Spa Montage.

  • The bungalow style suites combine privacy with heavenly ocean
  • Even the kids get to experience the area’s artsy atmosphere. Paintbox, the hotel’s kids’ program, offers games and arts and crafts for children and teens.
  • We love that the veggies plated in one of the three onsite restaurants likely were grown in the hotel’s own garden

The hotel, built in 2003, lets guests choose from 250 spacious rooms and suites ranging from 500 to 2,800 square feet—each with a private oceanfront balcony and spectacular view of the Laguna Beach coastline. But we prefer one of the 37 beach bungalow-style suites removed from the main building for maximum privacy.

The luxurious accommodations and acres of lush landscaping are reason enough to stay, but perhaps the biggest draw at Montage Laguna Beach is the stunning Spa Montage, a 20,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor wonderland of indulgence. A total of 21 treatment rooms offer every therapy imaginable, and you don’t miss the breathtaking ocean vistas, thanks to the spa’s floor-to-ceiling windows.

Public transportation isn’t really an option. If you want to explore off-property, we recommend renting your own car

Where is it and what's nearby

Less glitz and glamour and more comfortable luxury, this hotel blends impeccable service with California’s famously relaxed attitude.

  • Fun in the sun starts with direct access to the beach, where a beach butler is at your beck and call all summer.
  • If classic American comfort food sounds better than California cuisine, head to Nick’s, a local favorite that always earns raves.
  • A short ride to the seaside town of Laguna Beach, which is lively, fun and SO California

Though technically not far from Los Angeles, the Montage Laguna Beach seems to be a world away. Set on an oceanfront bluff with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, guests have the run of 30 gorgeously landscaped acres. Plus, we found it easy to access picturesque Laguna Beach and its charming galleries and shops.

The area is a renowned artists’ colony, dating back to the turn of the 20th century, and the hotel’s California Arts & Crafts style—complete with period architecture—pays homage to the era. The effect is a hard-to-pull-off combination of elegant seaside retreat and amenity-filled cosmopolitan resort.

How to enjoy Laguna Beach

With its walkable, village size, quaint stores and discreet restaurants, Laguna Beach is perfect for anyone seeking a spot of romance

  • For sandy seclusion, head to 1,000 Steps Beach; the 230 steep steps work wonders at keeping the crowds away
  • Marvel at the beauty of Purple Sea Urchins or pale green Dead Man’s Fingers hidden below the surface of the coastline’s many tidepools
  • Find rare books, unique home furnishings and exquisite jewelry in the many independent boutique stores

MTV reality show, Laguna Beach, may have put this coastal village on the map for a certain demographic, but it is connoisseurs of art, fine dining and shopping who really understand this town’s charm. With more than 70 works of public art and over 100 art galleries and studios to browse with names as diverse as Matisse, Chuck Close and Picasso it is an art lovers dream.

The natural scenery is pretty awesome too. The rocky outcroppings that enclose the pristine white sand beaches harbor many impressive tidepools. There are also plenty of opportunities to go surfing, skimboarding, diving and snorkelling. Check out Reef Point for what local divers describe as a healthy reef with curious fish.
