Why we choose Hotel Bel-Air

In the city of facelifts, Hotel Bel-Air has not just ironed out the crow’s feet and lifted a few sags, it’s been reborn as Grace Kelly with an iPad

  • The individually designed suites are truly breathtaking
  • The magical 12 acres of gardens transport you to another world
  • We love the restaurant where Wolfgang Puck can often be found

This private estate-turned-hotel unveiled a complete renovation in 2011, with a retro feel and tons of updates. We love that the décor is true to its 1940s origins, with more than a nod to Hollywood’s most glamorous decades, while ensuring the amenities are new millennium.

It’s not huge, but everything this iconic hotel does is executed well. There’s one restaurant, for example, but it’s run by top chef Wolfgang Puck. Similarly, the 5-star spa features seven treatment rooms including a large enclave with private patio that is perfect for a couple’s retreat or wedding party

The Premier Canyon Suites. We loved the private terrace with fire pit and plunge pool highlighted by perfect views across the canyon.

What you need to know about the hotel

The hidden oasis stars go to escape and rejuvenate in the heart of Los Angeles

  • Smaller in scale than its rivals, Hotel Bel-Air focuses on quality over quantity
  • The hotel was recently updated while preserving its historic mission-style Hollywood glamour
  • There are winding pathways amidst over 400 types of lush flora and a stunning Swan Lake

What is now the main mission-style building was originally the sales offices for the Bel-Air residential development. In 1922, they were located next to the stables where residents could board their horses, which is why the iconic pool is oval shaped — it was built over the original riding ring of the stables.

Sunday brunch at the Hotel Bel-Air is possibly the best way to spend a leisurely few hours. But if you want to hit the ground running, why not ask Wolfgang Puck’s team to prepare one of his famed gourmet picnic baskets and head for the beach.

Where is it and what's nearby

Located just off Sunset Boulevard in Bel-Air, it’s only a few minutes from its sister hotel in Beverly Hills and all that LA has to offer

  • Set within 12 acres of lush gardens and lakes, it’s a world within itself
  • The iconic oval pool is the ultimate hideaway location
  • The urban/rural location of the Bel Air will entice you to hike the surrounding hills

With 187-acres of high chaparral-swathed woodland all around and the Will Rogers State Historic Park in the Pacific Palisades nearby you can really enjoy the natural beauty of this part of California

That if you’re in the mood for a little star sighting (and incredible city views) head to Runyon Canyon at the base of the foothills just West of Hollywood. You never know who your fellow hikers may be.

How to enjoy Beverly Hills

With ultra-chic designer stores and private pool-side cabañas, this is where the world comes when it needs a dose of star treatment. At the heart of 90210 and at the center of the movie industry, Beverly Hills glitters below a liberal sprinkling of stardust

  • Bring your cell, you never know who’s going to hold the elevator door for you in the hotel lobby
  • Make time for Rodeo Drive, whether you are shopping or star spotting, this street never disappoints
  • Get some me time. The city boasts some of the best stylists and spas in the country, go on pamper yourself

Beverly Hills is where many of the world’s rich and famous call home. Making sure these residents are well cared for and happy is a major local industry and can be found everywhere from exclusive bars and restaurants to world class health retreats. A meandering tour of the local area could take in plenty of famed addresses from the Playboy Mansion, to the former homes of Marlon Brando or Doris Day and the current homes of Harrison Ford, Madonna, Jack Nicholson and many more.

For an authentic Hollywood experience, head to the Hollywood & Highland Center to find the home of the Kodak Theater (Academy Awards) and great views of the Hollywood sign. To keep the whole silver screen theme going, stroll back down Hollywood Boulevard to track the path of bronze and marble stars inset into the Walk of Fame and the imprints of famous hands and feet outside the entrance to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

    When to visit Beverly Hills

To rub shoulders with out-of-town A listers, visit Beverly Hills in February. Many actors will be flying in to collect their golden statuettes at the Academy Awards, or at least they’ll be hoping to.

  • A word from the hotel

One of the things that makes Hotel Bel-Air so special is the emotional attachment our guests have to the hotel. I recently met a guest who’d been coming here for 60 years, and he showed me photos of him at the pool when he was six years old.”
    Denise Flanders, General Manager

  • Well I never

Hotel Bel-Air hosted Marilyn Monroe’s last Vogue photo shoot just two weeks before her death.

  • Well I never

Tony Curtis once lived at the hotel. He described it as, “The best wife I ever had. She doesn’t ask me where I’ve been all night.”

  • Who would have thought it

Richard Nixon, 37th President of the United States wrote his memories in the Swan Lake suite at the Bel-Air.

  • Awards and accolades

Gallivanters's Guide Awards for Excellence awarded Hotel Bel-Air #1 Best Resort in North America

The Huffington Post included Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air among the Top Hotel Restaurants in the World

  • We say

Fiercely protective of its famous reputation for privacy and discretion, we can only tell you that for decades anyone who was anyone has overnighted here; some alone, some with whomever...
