How to enjoy Mexico City

Explore Mexico’s sprawling capital with its history that spans the ages from the ancient Aztecs, through the conquistadors, the grizzly conclusion of the Russian Revolution and ultramodern day art and architecture

  • Head to the Arena de México for the fun filled flamboyant circus that is the Mexican wrestling known as lucha libre
  • Treat yourself, or the man in your life, to the epitome of South American sartorial sophistication, a Guayabera shirt
  • For cool shopping and dance till dawn nightlife, get down to Zona Rosa or the equally hip and arty, Condesa

Immerse yourself in the rich history of Mexico City in the Centro Histórico. Here you will find the remains of the pyramid-shaped Aztec temple, Templo Mayor, as well as colonial European architecture and cobblestoned alleys. The Floating Gardens of Xochimilco were once the Aztec city’s breadbasket. Today local families hire trajinera boats and float down the canals on sunny weekends.

The Coyoacán district was once home to Mexico’s most famous artists, Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera. Today their house is a gallery of art and a museum of their lives. Nearby is Leon Trotsky’s former home, its watchtowers stand testament to how the Russian revolutionary spent the last years of his life. The museum is fascinating, capturing a moment in time, including Trotsky’s office which is left as it was the day he was murdered.
