Why we choose The Dolder Grand

A blend of resort and city living in chic, timeless Zurich

  • The hotel’s remarkable art collection is worth a tour
  • A Mercedes-Benz convertible is at your exclusive disposal
  • Hotel chefs offer cooking classes ranging from Christmas cookies to Thai food

In 2008, one of Zurich’s landmark hotels reinvented itself to great acclaim. Since the original “Curhaus” transitioned into a world-class luxury resort for a new era, awards have piled up for everything from design to the spa to the renovation itself. The overhaul combined the restored, historic main building, which dates from 1899, with two new wings (the Spa Wing and the Golf Wing) that curve around the main building in a fusion of past and future. It was a risky proposition, but it paid off handsomely for the famed hotel with even more famous views.

What you need to know about the hotel

The Dolder lives up to its “grand” name with a majestic setting and contemporary amenities

  • The two-floor Maestro Suite includes a lounge terrace with phenomenal views across Zurich, the lake and the Alps
  • With two Michelin stars and 18 GaultMillau points, the Restaurant is a fine dining haven that also offers private dining
  • The Dolder Grand Spa has 13,000 square feet of treatment space, as well as fitness like yoga, Pilates and aqua gymnastics

The Dolder Grand and its 173 rooms and suites are perfect for travelers clamoring for both exclusivity and relaxation while they’re in Zurich. There’s a definite high-brow feeling that stems from the history of the hotel and its 100-year-old Main Building, where the revamped rooms feature an eclectic mix of old (turn-of-the-century balconies) and new (white marble bathrooms). Conversely, the two newly built wings’ floor-to-ceiling windows and sand-coloured Jura limestone exude a modern spirit. The differing sentiments offer a rare opportunity to pick your poison: traditional or contemporary.

Where is it and what's nearby

The Dolder Grand has one foot in the pulsating city and one in the breathtaking natural splendor of Zurich

  • Ritzy Bahnhofstrasse is the street for high-end shopping; preview finds at Dolder’s Grider Boutique, a smaller version of renowned fashion house Grieder
  • The Swiss National Museum’s (Landesmuseum) must-see collection of Swiss artifacts dates from pre-historic times: art, china, silver, weapons—even a clock-making exhibit
  • In terms of sightseeing, it’s tough to beat an afternoon cruise on Lake Zurich, one of Europe’s most beautiful lakes

The hotel has an elevated location between the vibrant city center and the lush greenery surrounding Zurich, affording eye-popping vistas of the lake, the Alps and the city landscape. Zurich is one of those great European cities that manages to straddle history and modernity magnificently. Its 44 museums and archives and almost 100 galleries showcase the best of the past, while a thriving nightlife and luxury brands on Bahnhofstrasse keep the city firmly in this century.

The best way to get to know Zurich is to get out and walk it. Luckily, the city is set up for exploration on foot and bicycle. There are lots of promenades throughout the city, and we highly recommend some time spent on and around Lake Zurich, where you can boat and swim (or bike around it). It’s definitely where the outdoor action is.

How to enjoy Zurich

Elegant and affluent with a love of fine chocolate and luxury watches, the Zurichians’ preference for refinement and quality can be seen everywhere, along with plenty of opportunity for indulgence

  • Check out the most amazing police department lobby ever. The vaulted ceiling is awash with Giacometti’s painted flowers
  • Bike, hike or catch a train to the peak of Zurich’s nearest mountain. At 2850ft Uetliberg offers panoramic views over the city
  • Enjoy the color and workmanship of Marc Chagall’s stained glass windows at the Fraumünster Church

To capture the essence of Switzerland’s love of the environment, precision engineering and luxury goods, take a trip to Freitag’s flagship store, where all three aspects are on show. Fashioned from recycled materials, their sought-after designer bags are beautifully displayed and sold from a building created out of old shipping containers.

If visiting high-rise metal boxes is not quite your thing, browse the cobbled lanes of the Schipf quarter, where art workshops, chocolate confiseries and bohemian cafes ply their trade. More great shopping in this wealthy banking city can be found in the medieval Alstadt (Old Town) and the downright glamorous Bahnhofstrasse.
