How to enjoy Madrid

Although a modern city, Madrid’s historic center has a timeless quality, where the majestic architecture nestles comfortably among the more modern structures. In the case of the Reina Sofia, modern and ancient meet seamlessly within the same building

  • Join in the traditional paseo (evening stroll) along the southernmost stretch of the Paseo de la Castellana, a wide boulevard with a lovely tree-lined walkway along its center
  • Soccer is big here and virtually revered at the iconic Bernabeu Stadium (home to Real Madrid), close to the heart of the city
  • Close to the Prado is Madrid’s green lung. The Retiro is a beautiful park with a lake and sculptures, plus plenty of welcome shade during the heat of the summer

If you love art you’ll adore Madrid. Its major museums and art galleries are bursting with old and young masters and their catalogues read like a who’s who of the art world. Here’s a taster. The Prado has Velázquez, El Greco and Goya, as well as Raphael, Titian and Tintoretto, Bosch and Rubens. Reina Sofía has Picasso’s masterpiece, Guernica, as well as Dalí, Miró and Tàpies. Thyssen-Bornemisza has Degas and Kandinsky.

If you can tear your eyes away from the art, feast them on the food. Ham is revered in this city and the excellent jamón ibérico can be found throughout from the teasing tapas to the excellent restaurants. The sumptuous deli in Mercado de San Antón is off the tourist trail. Choose the meat or fish of your desire and they’ll cook it for you upstairs in the trendy restaurant, La Cocina de San Antón.

If you fancy steak then head to the Asador Donostiarra. This Basque eatery really knows how to grill. ¡Que aproveche!
