Why we choose Mandarin Oriental Barcelona

This Barcelona beauty offers a prestigious address, spectacular views and top-notch facilitates

  • The rooftop terrace has a pool and 360-degree views over Barcelona
  • Butler service in all suites and Mandarin rooms
  • Moments, the Catalan restaurant, has earned two Michelin stars
  • Their newly-redone rooftop terrace café serves delightful Nikkei cuisine (Peruvian-Japanese snacks)

Sure, it’s high-end luxury all the way, but this hotel stakes its reputation on service—like remembering a second-time guest’s culinary preferences. Those are the kind of details that keep people coming
back.

We suggest

Balcony rooms at the front overlooking the boulevard, or rooms in the rear overlooking the lovely gardens.

What you need to know about the hotel

A reflection of the city’s sophistication, with a dash of Mandarin Oriental’s trademark Asian influence

  • The spa features two luxury couples’ suites and two oriental suites, complete with individual vitality pools and futons for Thai massages
  • The 2542-square-foot Penthouse Suite occupies the entire eighth floor of the hotel and boasts two double balconies
  • Shopping tours include deals at luxury shops like Bulagri and Jimmy Choo or a guided experience through 100-year-old gems

Mandarin Oriental Barcelona is housed in an elegant mid-20th century building originally constructed as the Banco Hispano Americano head office (hence its signature cocktail, the Banker’s Martini). Today, the 120-keys hotel is a modern, stylish beacon with creative Spanish-meets-Eastern interiors. Their new suite wing includes 17 suites and 5 Mandarin rooms.

The guestroom views are worth a mention: Some are of the busy boulevard in front of the hotel, while rooms at the back look onto the landscaped interior garden. Add in delightful amenities like an expansive spa and Michelin-starred dining, and you have a contemporary, urban powerhouse.

Where is it and what's nearby

It doesn’t get much better in Barcelona, location-wise, than the famous Passeig de Gràcia

  • Foodie heaven can be found at La Boqueria, a 300-year-old market with fresh produce, entertainment and to-die-for Cava and tapas
  • Barcelona is filled with testaments to Antoni Gaudi’s genius, including the nearby Gaudi Houses and his grand opus, the Sagrada Familia cathedral
  • The Picasso Museum (3,500 works) and Joan Miró Foundation, featuring a comprehensive collection of the Catalan artist’s works, are visual feasts

Passeig de Gràcia is the center of Barcelona’s commercial and entertainment district—including huge names in upscale fashion brands—and the Mandarin Oriental puts you right there. Guests also get to take up temporary residence near landmarks like Gaudi’s Casa Batlló with its fabulous façade.

Barcelona is one of Spain’s hippest, most contemporary cities—but it also prides itself on its rich history and cultural offerings. From visual art to opera to stunning architecture to music, this cosmopolitan city is one-stop shopping for arts lovers. And if you’re more into beaches, the Costa Brava is a mere 10 minutes away.

How to enjoy Barcelona

One of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Barcelona is unashamedly romantic, artistic and unexpected, shaped by the vivid imaginations of its abstract sons, Miró, Gaudí, Piccaso and Dalí

  • The Picasso Museum is a must. It features much of his early work, including his Blue Period, reflecting on the time he lived here
  • Get tickets to the Nou Camp to see Barça play at home. Currently regarded by many to be the world’s finest soccer team, it is famously owned by its fans
  • For a delightful shopping experience, mooch your way down Passeig de Gràcia where handmade jewelry stores nestle among luxury names

If you do nothing else on your trip to Barcelona, put on your walking shoes, find your way to La Rambla and stroll. This pedestrian street runs straight through the heart of the city, down to the sea. It buzzes with street performers, buskers and artists and is filled with shops, cafes and restaurants. Stop en route to admire the pavement mosaic by Miró, Gaudí’s street lamps in the palm fringed Plaça Reial and the colorful market, the Mercat de la Boqueria.

If Gaudí’s street lamps caught your imagination, wait till you see what else he brought to this city. His Park Güell was designed as a garden city where workers could live. It could have come straight off the set of the Wizard of Oz and features an inviting, winding tiled bench that offers views across the entire city. His (unfinished) Familia Sagrada is a cathedral like no other, with spiking spires reaching to heaven and stunningly detailed facades.

    When to visit Barcelona

Visit at the end of September for lovely weather and Barcelona’s annual five day quirky street party, La Merce. It features parades of giants (Gigantes), human towers topped by children (Castellers) and fire runs (Correfocs). Really.
