How to enjoy Scotland

Scotland has a proud cultural heritage and a fierce national identity. Forged over the centuries in wars with the English, the battles are still held as epic moments in the national psyche: the Battle of Bannockburn and the Battle of Stirling Bridge to name but two

  • Contact St Andrew’s well in advance to arrange a game on the renowned Old Course. Failing that, speak to your concierge who may be able to arrange a tee time
  • Check to see if your family name has a clan tartan, there are thousands to choose from and you can then have a kilt made in your family’s colors
  • Learn about the Angel’s Share as you sip your dram of whisky on one of the nation’s many excellent distillery tours

With its Gothic stone architecture (imposing facades and little turrets abound) and quaint alleys, Edinburgh is a great city to explore. Towering impassive over the city is Edinburgh Castle. Home to many treasures including the Stone of Destiny and the Scottish Crown Jewels, it’s worth a detour. But Scotland’s real gems can be found up county in the purple heather of the highlands and in two of the nation’s greatest exports: Scotch and golf.

Perthshire is one of Scotland’s many great whisky producing regions, with tiny microbreweries such as Edradour (Scotland’s smallest) and Glenturret (Scotland’s oldest) open for business and tours. World famous golf clubs can be found throughout the nation: Turnberry, Gleneagles, Carnoustie, Royal Troon. The most famous of all is where golf first started, St Andrews, where golf has been enjoyed since the 1400s.
