How to enjoy St. Petersburg

Culture vulture? Indulge in the delicious hangover from the older days of communism, when art was considered to be a staple, not only for the privileged. From fine art, to architecture, literature and performing arts, St Petersburg is a celebration of creativity

  • In vibrant contrast with its more sinister name, the medieval Church of Spilled Blood is candy store bright, with colourful onion-shaped domes
  • Take a hydrofoil from the jetty outside the Hermitage to visit the Summer Palace. As grand and opulent as Versailles
  • Nevsky Prospekt is the center of the city’s cultural and social life. Linger in a cafe for people watching, just as Dostoevsky and Gogol before you

St Petersburg will be the most indulgent treat, if you enjoy the arts. Ask the hotel concierge for tickets that are not just to the (very beautiful) Mariinsky Theatre but to any local music concerts. There are excellent recitals happening almost every evening in unassuming halls. Must see sights include the Winter Palace. We defy you to keep your mouth closed as your jaw will drop in awe.

If you’re visiting in winter choose a bright day to see the Hermitage. The gold trim on the imposing façade glitters in the sunlight beautifully. While on the subject of winter, note that the heating will be on full blast inside your hotel, stores, museums etc. You’ll poach in your thermals, dozen layers, scarves, hat and gloves. It pays to invest in polar quality kit that’s very warm and protects your face but doesn’t require half an hour in a vestibule to put on or take off.
