How to enjoy Madeira

Legend says Madeira was discovered by Portuguese sailors who were blown off-course in a storm in 1418. Today, stepping foot on this Portuguese Atlantic archipelago 400 miles or so off the west coast of Africa, still feels like finding a hidden gem

  • Take a wickerwork, wheeled, Monte sledge for a ten minute high speed ride down the steep streets of Funchal. Sound crazy? It is
  • Sample Madeira Wine: a rich fortified wine, it keeps well and it is still possible to taste history with wines dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries
  • Hike the levadas, aqueducts that crisscross Madeira and travel through spectacular scenery including woodland and cascading waterfalls

Love golf? You’d be forgiven for refusing to believe a golf course can exist on the main island of Madeira. The violence of its volcanic birth is evident all around with steep cliffs, gullies and razor sharp crests. But somehow, a glorious Robert Trent Jones 27-hole course nestles into the landscape and hosts an annual PGA Tour.

Madeira’s little sister Porto Santo has a much flatter topography and is worth a visit for the five mile stretch of hotel-free, golden sandy beach alone. However, if you go searching for golf, you’ll be rewarded with a lush 18-hole course designed by the late Seve Ballesteros. For a subterranean insight into the formation of the island, visit the volcanic caves of São Vicente.

    When to visit Madeira

Madeirans love their pyrotechnics. For quite ridiculously amazing firework spectacles visit in June for the Atlantic Festival, or New Years when this tiny island succeeds to put on the greatest show on earth.
