Why we choose Hotel Danieli

A combination of three Palazzi create this Venetian landmark that represents the history and grandeur of La Serinissima

  • It’s just the most romantic grand hotel in Venice, make that Europe
  • The lobby bar is the social rendezvous point for the city
  • The Terrazza restaurant offers food as unforgettable as the views

Hotel Danieli is a step back in time but with the added convenience of, well, everything. Sights both inside (its world-famous staircase) and outside (a picturesque lagoon) appeal to your aesthetics, while award-winning dining keeps your tummy happy.

What you need to know about the hotel

This timeless masterpiece of the 14th century is Venetian architecture at its finest with an accessible location

  • The Academy of Fine Arts of Venice collaborated on four suites paying homage to Doge Enrico Dandolo, Maria Callas, Grace Kelly and Greta Garbo
  • Since the 1500s, guests have included kings, writers and artists ranging from Dickens to Wagner and modern stars like Sean Connery
  • Rooftop eatery Restaurant Terrazza Danieli’s Head Sommelier won the 2009 Bonaventura Maschio Award for Excellence

The luxurious Hotel Danieli is composed of three palaces dating from the 14th, 19th and 20th centuries—all of which have been redone to maximize modern comfort while maintaining their rich heritage. Especially noteworthy is the 14th century Palazzo Dandolo, which includes details like delicately woven rugs, Murano glass, ornately carved pink marble columns, stained glass and high ceilings decorated with golden leaves. One warning: rooms sizes differ, so check the square footage before you book. Or save the worry and go with a posh suite.

We suggest

Taking a trip out to the Venice Lido where the hotel can arrange ’privileged conditions’ on a private beach, or tennis and golf for the more active.

Where is it and what's nearby

A few minutes’ walk to the heart of the city, Hotel Danieli combines great access with a secluded atmosphere

  • A short boat ride away, Venice Lido offers guests private beach facilities, swimming pools, tennis and golf
  • Take a 60-mile side trip to Verona, the setting for Romeo and Juliet and also a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • Tour the Byzantine architecture of St. Mark’s Basilica to view jaw-dropping mosaics and five domes copied from Constantinople

Whether it’s your home or your vacation hotel, it’s all about location, and Hotel Danieli has it. A central address on Riva degli Schiavoni brings you close to main attractions like St. Mark’s Square, and you can’t go wrong with the legendary palazzo’s beautiful views over the city’s lagoon. And speaking of the city, you’ll definitely want to get out and explore its rich history through architecture, the many fabulous museums and of course food.

How to enjoy Venice

For centuries a picture postcard destination, but Venice is much more than a box to tick on your ’been there, done that’ list. Take your time, plan your journey and La Serenissima will steal your heart

  • Take a motoscafo from the airport and you’ll be in love with Venice before you reach your hotel door
  • Stroll the narrow lanes of St Marks early mornings; discovering delights like the fish market makes you feel like a native
  • Find a comfortable perch with a view of the Grand Canal and marvel at the living history that is Venice

The mists of autumn conjure up an otherworldly Venice as gondolas flit in and out of sight while footsteps echo in the narrow lanes. Carnival brings glorious color and excitement to February’s somber days. Summer is a riot of waterborne festivities from the Vogalonga race to the fireworks spectacle of Il Redentore.

They say that you’ll never meet a poor Venetian, and you can see why if you order a round of drinks from the tempting outdoor tables in the cafes of St Marks Square. The canals are the arteries of the city and the greatest pleasure is to find a quiet waterside perch from which to survey the daily life of this most captivating of cities.

    When to visit Venice

From June through November, Palazzo Barbarigo’s 18th century grandeur is home to a series of classical concerts. Summer is regatta season, with pageantry-filled races ranging from huge boats to one-man challenges.

  • You need to know

That the hotel’s Bar Dandolo has won numerous awards and is ranked as one of the best bars in Italy, but dress well or the fashion police will issue a citation.

  • By the way

The last time we checked the hotel was charging for in-room Wifi access, which is never great, but you can log on for free in the main lobby area.
