Why we choose Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco

Magnificent views and old world charm in the heart of Tuscany

  • The spa uses fresh, naturally-derived ingredients inspired by the beauty and fragrances of Tuscany in their pampering treatments, together with exclusive La Prairie facial treatments and products
  • The hotel offers charm and tradition in spades, while modern convenience is subtly deployed
  • With an on-site winery, private golf course, tennis courts, hiking trails, and a sumptuous spa, the estate provides all you need for a relaxing getaway

An ancient castle is the centerpiece of this historic Tuscan estate which hosts a handful of restored villas in its generous grounds. With pergolas for dining al fresco, private pools and spacious accommodations, the villas are at the heart of this perfect countryside retreat.

The estate, a 5,000-acre nature reserve, was once a working farm and village. Today the hotel’s elegant suites are housed in lovingly converted farm buildings, while the Osteria la Canonica and the Cooking School has brought new life to the old priest’s house.

Upgrade. The suites are luxurious, but the villas are truly sublime.

We suggest

If you’re vacationing in famiglia then choose a villa. They’re spacious and private, and come with gardens, patios and a pool.

Where is it and what's nearby

Snug in a Tuscan valley, just a short trip from the treasures of Florence and Siena

  • Immersed in the UNESCO listed Val d’Orcia Natural and Cultural Park, yet close enough to explore the small towns and villages
  • Perfect for a daytrip to Siena where medieval architecture and cobbled streets offer art, culture and a little boutique shopping

Don’t use this as your base for visiting Florence. Come here for a restful retreat for a few days after you’ve ’done’ the hustle and bustle of Tuscany’s first city.

How to enjoy Tuscany

We’ll introduce Tuscany to you with a health warning: you may love this stunningly beautiful corner of Italy so much that you never want to leave

  • Finding the wide, bright splendor of the Piazza del Campo after winding your way through Siena’s narrow, shadowed lanes is excitement in itself
  • The Leaning Tower is amazing; but it’s not the only marvel in Pisa—don't miss the domed Battistero where Galileo Galilei was baptised
  • Stroll the Passeggiata delle Mura Urbane in Lucca, a street atop the walls linking the bastions of the old town

There’s something majestic about Tuscany. Sure, there’s the wondrous art and architecture sponsored by the wealthy Medici family throughout the region, most notably in Florence. But you’ll also find it in unexpected places, such as the seven-arch bridge, Ponte Buriano, perhaps more recognisable as the backdrop to the Mona Lisa. Or in a glass of Montepulciano, served al fresco on the terrace of a trattoria in the town of the same name.

Talking of wine, Tuscany is home to Chianti, whose vineyards fill the hills between Florence and Siena. Tours are available at several wineries including Fattoria Viticcio and Montefioralle. The region abounds with charming medieval towns that crown the verdant hills. There’s plenty to choose from. For starters see Pitigliano, Brunello di Montalcino, or San Gimignano (the latter is the model backdrop for Assassin's Creed—possibly useful knowledge if you have teens in tow).

    When to visit Tuscany

Visit Pisa on June 16 for the Luminara di San Ranieri. A festival of light, the river and every monument is decorated with thousands of candles. July and August host the spectacle of Siena’s Il Palio, where horses and riders representing the town’s contrade (districts) compete in a thrilling bareback race around the city’s main square. Go and see the famous concert of the Italian singer Andrea Bocelli in his Silence Theater in Lajatico.

  • Did you know

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco’s colourful heritage goes back to 600BC when it was an Etruscan lookout. Later pilgrims rested here on their way from Canterbury to Rome. Finally, in Medieval times, came church frescoes by artists who would later find fame in the Sienese School.
