Why we choose Belmond Hotel Splendido & Splendido Mare

The pull of Splendido’s magnificent sister properties will have you booking a second trip before your first ends

  • Take a sunset cruise on the hotel’s private boat
  • The chef conducts olive oil and focaccia tastings
  • Schedule private tennis lessons on the hillside court

In a country known for its glamorous hotels, the Splendido outshines most of them. Supremely elegant and sited overlooking chic Portofino, this is where it’s at.

Portofino is one of those destinations that determine how in-the-know you are. Far less touristy than major Italian metropolises, it’s a magnet for the rich and famous. Once you go, you’ll understand why this little corner of paradise is a jewel the glitterati wants to keep to themselves.

What you need to know about the hotel

One of Italy’s most glamorous retreats with stunning views over Portofino

  • Belmond Hotel Splendido’s luxe Presidential Suite boasts a tromp l’oeil bedroom and four terraces overlooking Portofino’s cove
  • Skip the chlorine; we’ll take Splendido’s heated saltwater pool to relax and catch a sea breeze
  • The properties specialize in romantic touches like Champagne, flowers and fresh fruit on arrival—even rose petal-strewn beds

Once an ancient monastery, the four-story Belmond Hotel Splendido now consists of 69 rooms and 39 suites—most with terraces or balconies that maximize views of the cove. We highly recommend the new top-floor suites with light-flooded interiors and a contemporary style that includes fine Italian furniture.

The more intimate Splendido Mare is located in one of the many historical buildings around the Piazzetta. Its 10 rooms and six suites continue the view-a-palooza with vistas of the charming little harbour or village.

We suggest

Lunch on the terrace of the Splendido Mare’s Chuflay restaurant overlooking the harbour; and dinner at the Splendido’s Terrazza for beautiful views as the sun sets over Portofino and the Mediterranean Sea.

Where is it and what's nearby

A secluded Portofino retreat with a dolce vita atmosphere

  • Nearby Genoa has one of the world’s best-preserved medieval centers and the largest aquarium in Italy
  • Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompasses five picturesque villages perched on the rugged coast
  • Sail to the ancient San Fruttuoso Abbey, whose centuries-old monastery, cloister and church feel like another world

Portofino is an enchanting town in the Italian Riviera, a traditional Lingurian fishing village whose Old World charm is enhanced by the fact that no new houses have been built since 1935. Tucked into the hills of this postcard-perfect setting is Belmond Hotel Splendido, with gorgeous views over the Gulf. Sister hotel Splendido Mare is closer to the action, occupying a prime location on Portofino’s famed Piazzetta. Whether you’re looking for a harbor view, with luxury yachts bobbing in the water, or a slightly more heart-of-village location, these hotels have you covered.

How to enjoy Portofino

The perfect fishing village that became the playground of the rich and famous, with one of the world’s most iconic hotels

  • The only thing small about Portofino is its size; from the phenomenal scenery to the price tags to the jet setters’ brand new toys—it doesn’t get bigger than this
  • For an uphill climb you’ll enjoy, stroll the well-marked path behind the harbor that winds through the village’s picturesque hills
  • Parking in Portofino is scarce and expensive, so forget about a car: Lock in airport transfers when you book your hotel

How in the world does a small Italian fishing village attract the sparkliest members of the international glitterati? Well, it doesn’t hurt that Portofino is part of the “Cinque Terre” (Five Lands), an area of Northern Italy that stretches south of Genoa. It’s all idyllic villages, Riviera weather and, of course, kiss-your-mama cuisine here. What’s not to like?

Portofino makes the most of its obscenely gorgeous location with ritzy designer shops that keep the well-heeled busy when they’re not showing off their latest Riva Super Aquaramas or Ferraris. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it, though. Nothing captures La Dolce Vita quite like mooring your yacht in the harbor and heading into Portofino for a pricy but scrumptious seafood dinner.

    When to visit Portofino

In the summer, the narrow coastal road from Genoa—the only way in and out of Portofino—gets absolutely jammed with traffic. If you’re feeling antsy just thinking about it, pick another time of year for lighter traffic. Maybe.

  • We say

A relaxed, elegant environment with a fabulous pool.

  • A word from the hotel

Our Pesto Show is not to be missed! Just before dinner we organize a fun cooking class to teach guests how to prepare the most famous Ligurian sauce: pesto.
Corrado Corti and Roberto Villa, Executive Chefs

  • You need to know

The Splendido Mare is the harbour-side sister of the clifftop Splendido. Guests at one are welcome to use the facilities at the other. Budget-conscious travelers would do well to stay at the Splendido Mare: it’s not as spacious or glamorous as its big sister, but it’s in a great location and the service is just as exemplary.
