Why we choose Four Seasons Hotel Milano

Only in Italy could a 15th century convent become one of the chicest hotels you’ve ever checked into

  • Go exclusive with the privately accessed Royal Suite spread over the entire 5th floor
  • Choose from 29 different brews during the exceptional afternoon tea
  • Like to shop solo? They’ll arrange after-hours shopping at local boutiques

Sleek, stylish—the Four Seasons embodies everything Milan stands for, and there’s no better place to stay if you want to shop ‘til you drop or explore the city’s charming café culture. There’s a real chance that your adorable-o-meter might explode, what with the hotel’s centuries-old cloistered garden and the winding stone streets that line the area.

What you need to know about the hotel

You’ll be transfixed by the mix of contemporary comforts within a building with ancient frescoed walls

  • Highlights of the new spa include original vaulted ceilings, a signature Rossano Ferretti hair salon and huge Turkish bath
  • Foodies can take cooking classes, indulge in menu tastings and go a little crazy at the “Cave au Chocolat.”
  • The hotel showcases rare 19th century drawings by Peroni, the then-Chief Set Designer at La Scala

Who knew a convent could be so much fun? This nunnery-turned-luxury hotel has preserved its Renaissance roots on the ground floor, while the upper floors and the façade reflect more of its neo-classical character. And it’s all framed by a 15th century cloistered, landscaped courtyard with a (go figure) Italian-style garden. One surprise: Despite this historic attention to detail, we found the decorative style to be largely modern.

The Four Seasons has almost as many suites as it does guestrooms (51 and 67, respectively), and they’re all spacious with memorably delightful bathrooms. As for dining pleasures, take your pick from an elegant, see-and-be-seen lounge and two restaurants—including one that’s consistently ranked among the city’s top five.

Where is it and what's nearby

In the heart of the fashion district among the high-end boutiques, trendy cafés and luxe lounges

  • Spend a night at La Scala, the world’s most famous opera house, where the audience is never shy
  • Milan is synonymous with fashion, and the hotel is located in a cluster of primo shops called “The Golden Quadrilateral”
  • An hour north of Milan is Lake Como, a gorgeous area that attracts Hollywood celebs (hey there, George Clooney!)

Milan is a large city in Northern Italy (it’s actually the second largest in the country) and, like any destination worth its salt, has a distinct personality. Though Italians in general are noted for their panache, Milan is the epicenter of all things fashionable. You’ll get an education in high style just walking down the street or sitting in the Four Seasons lounge.

As befitting its role as the fashion capital of Italy, Milan has a mouth-watering array of stylish restaurants, cafes and bars. But it’s also a cultural hub—La Scala is a must even for people who don’t care for opera—and a history-stuffed center with more than its fair share of Renaissance architecture. We love the fact that Milan has something for everyone, whether you’re a clothes junkie, foodie or a history buff.

How to enjoy Milan

Elegant and sophisticated, the power house behind Italian fashion, Milan’s a city that means business

  • The Last Supper is the reason many come to Milan, so naturally the lines are huge and admission is dicey: beg your concierge for help
  • La Scala is the benchmark of Italian opera and a must do if at all possible. Hint: You can never be overdressed at La Scala
  • The Milano Centrale railway station is an enormous, architecturally interesting stop even when you don’t need its services

In the mood for lazy strolls with stops to smell the roses? Try Venice. Milan is a working town, Italian style. This is banking and fashion central, and power players are focused on closing deals and making money. Milan is an exciting city, fueled by lots of espresso and jammed with zooming traffic. It’s hard for tourists to just stand around and gawk, though ironically, there’s lots to gawk at.

Milan is a fashion hub on par with Paris and is home to Italian couturier flagship stores like Versace, Armani and Missoni. The best place to take in this smorgasbord is the Golden Quadrilateral near the Duomo. Made up of Via Montenapoleone, Della Spiga, Via Borgospesso and Via Sant’Andrea, the Quadrilateral is a high-priced, high-fashion extravaganza.

Money, couture, famous artwork, opera and soccer—Milan is a single destination that represents everything Italians hold dear. Chic even by Italian standards, this city demands that you up your style game.

    When to visit Milan

Like most places in Italy, spring and fall are the best times to visit Milan. Summer is hot and sticky, and some of its stores and restaurants shutter in August.

  • We say

We love this hotel—it captures the style of Northern Italy.

  • You need to know

The new city-wide Congestion Charge aims to reduce traffic to the city center during the week by enforcing a five-Euro-a-day ticket to gain admission.

  • We say

Best location to shop, shop, shop.
