Why we choose Hotel Savoy, a Rocco Forte hotel

A longstanding tradition of luxury just steps from fashion nirvana

  • The new onsite Flower Shop offers classic and trendy compositions
  • Kids get milk and cookies, their own toiletries and special city guides
  • The bar’s atmosphere and superior martinis placed it on the “Bond Bar” circuit

Hotel Savoy is a chameleon that engages traditionalists while catering to modern luxury seekers as well. The rooms, for example, have classic parquet floors and mosaics in the bathrooms but also feature contemporary ceramics, artwork and fabrics. Whether you prefer a hotel that reminds you of refined days gone by or one that’s thoroughly up-to-date, this hotel has got it all—and without one atmosphere clashing with the other.

What you need to know about the hotel

The amenities are fully modern, but the feel is definitely “timeless luxury”

  • Suite Brunelleschi and Suite Signoria feature a private indulgence: a state-of-the-art steam room equipped with chromotherapy and aromatherapy
  • As a tribute to the designer fashion houses of Florence, eye-catching images of shoes have been installed throughout the hotel
  • Inspired by Florence’s art? The hotel can arrange private classes with master instructors in subjects like fresco painting, sculpture and watercolor

Unveiled in 1893, the Hotel Savoy was heralded as a supremely modern destination with central heating, an elevator and electric lights. Today, it’s still known as a modern marvel, though it maintains a certain sophistication more associated with centuries past. Its 102 rooms and suites feature marble baths and luxe touches, which are taken to even greater heights in the 14 suites—most notably in their glorious views over Piazza della Repubblica.

The hotel also offers fashionable L’Incontro Restaurant, which serves Tuscan and international cuisine, and L’Incontro Bar, which introduces new martinis every month. A fitness center equipped with the latest machines and an onsite flower shop round out the facilities.

Where is it and what's nearby

Overlooking the Duomo and Piazza della Repubblica in the very center of Florence.

  • Hit the shopping jackpot at nearby Via Tornabuoni, where you can browse designer names like Pucci, Gucci, Ferragamo, Bulgari and Versace
  • Art lovers should visit Uffizi Gallery, the oldest public art gallery in the world, and Pitti Palace, which houses many important collections
  • Plan a day in Tuscany and the Chianti wine region, with a chauffeured car, guided vineyard tours and (of course!) tastings

Florence, set in Italy’s famed Tuscany region, is known as the cradle of the Renaissance and is loaded with Renaissance art, architectural masterpieces, stunning churches and world-renowned museums. Fortunately, many of its greatest treasures are centered around the centro storico—right around the corner from the Hotel Savoy. Located in the Piazza della Repubblica and amazingly close to the Duomo, perhaps Florence’s most famous landmark, you’re within a few minutes’ walk of the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio and some of the hottest fashion boutiques in the city.

How to enjoy Florence

For lovers of art, architecture, literature and history Florence is a real treat. Dante, Botticelli, Donatello, Galileo Galilei, Giotto, Michaelangelo, Raphael and da Vinci have all called the city home and much of their work is on show here

  • Marvel at Giotti’s frescoes in the Basilica of Santa Croce; its cavernous interiors and marble will feel cool in even the hottest of Italian summers
  • Oltrarno is the artisan’s quarter—it contrasts with the opulence of the museums, but is no less fascinating with artists’ studios and workshops
  • Take a break from culture and savor a long and hearty meal at one of the city’s numerous and excellent trattorias

Just as Florence was a magnet for artists during the Renaissance, today it is a magnet for lovers of their work. Admittedly there can be long lines for the most popular museums, including the Uffizi (Botticelli’s Birth of Venus) and the Accademia (Michaelangelo’s David). The trick is to visit out of season, or invest in a Firenze Card. The latter gives you free entry to the city’s 67 museums for three days and most importantly allows you to bypass the ticket line for each one.

For utterly breathtaking views, head to the top of the Duomo’s Cupola. With 463 steps to the top of the Cupola and 414 to the viewing platform at the top of the Campanile, it might not just be the view that takes your breath away. For romance, it’s hard to beat the beauty of the Ponte Vecchio. The store-lined bridge has hosted jewellers and goldsmiths since the 1300s. For upscale shopping see Via Tornabuoni, and wander the cool and elegant boutiques of local designers Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo and Roberto Cavalli.

    When to visit Florence

Visit during Easter for cool temperatures and a chance to see the Scoppio del Carro. This 400 year-old Easter Sunday tradition sees an enormous, highly decorated wagon pulled through the streets by white oxen before it is exploded (quite literally) with fireworks and spectacular pyrotechnics.
