Why we choose Le Sirenuse

This hillside home has views across the sunwarmed town and azure Mediterranean sea

  • The spa is special: designed by the architect who created the Musée d’Orsay
  • The hotel’s La Sponda restaurant is Michelin starred
  • The Champagne & Oyster Bar’s ambience includes live DJ music

Even great American novelists have fallen under the spell of Le Sirenuse. In 1953, two years after this elegant 18thcentury family house was converted into a hotel, John Steinbeck descended on the property and later wrote of the area: “Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” Not much has changed since then.

This small boutique hotel is a treasure. Wedged into the cliffside overlooking Positano, the location is half of its success. Attention to detail from the family-run team and excellent dining—the restaurant has a well-deserved Michelin star—completes the picture.

We suggest

Any room, as long as it has a sea view.

What you need to know about the hotel

Le Sirenuse is a gorgeous boutique hotel in the heart of Positano and within walking distance of the sea

  • The temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool is a peaceful haven surrounded by lemon trees and comfortable deck chairs
  • Michelin-starred La Sponda Restaurant treats you to Mediterranean cuisine under a ceiling of bougainvillea, surrounded by hundreds of tiny candles
  • Spread out in a two-bedroom suite, which offers the best sea views, private terrace, upscale furnishings and artworks from the hotel’s impressive collection

In 1951 four siblings turned a family home into Le Sirenuse, a hotel
that today consists of 59 rooms overlooking its namesake, the Islands of the
Sirens. The rooms are a mix of modern and classic glamour, with antique
furniture, vaulted ceilings and handmade Vietri floor tiles. We recommend rooms with terraces and balconies looking out to the sea.

Those same glorious views can be found in the three different restaurant settings, each focused on fresh local ingredients—heavy on seafood. Other facilities include a full-service Aveda Spa & Fitness Center, outdoor pool and a daily calendar of activities to keep you as busy as you want to be.

Where is it and what's nearby

The hotel sits on a steep hill overlooking the pretty town of Positano and the sparkling Mediterranean sea

  • Spend a day on the hotel’s wooden boat to best appreciate the beauty of the coastline
  • Herculaneum, buried in mud by Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, has well-preserved baths, theatres and recently uncovered Patrician villas
  • Ascend to the top of Mt. Vesuvius, now a National Park, to view blackened lava, pumice stone pebbles and still-rising smoke

Le Sirenuse is an impeccable palazzo in the heart of Positano, a village on Italy’s charming Amalfi Coast. About 30 miles from Naples, it’s at the center of a significant archeological area that includes Naples, Pompeii, Paestum, Amalfi, Ravello, Capri and other famous names. Even people who aren’t particularly interested in history will find these areas fascinating. In addition, you can explore the surrounding sea from the comfort of the hotel’s wooden vessel, the Sant’Antonio, which makes daily excursions along the coast.

How to enjoy Amalfi Coast

In a country known for La Dolce Vita, Amalfi reigns as a glamorous seaside icon that has won the hearts of Hollywood’s elite and stylish romance seekers for decades: one visit and you’ll join the ranks of the besotted

  • Start your sightseeing at Amalfi’s Duomo, with its gold leaf-embellished façade and millennia of history
  • Discover Amalfi’s legendary papermaking industry (whose products are still a Vatican favorite) with a tour of the Cartiera Amatruda mill
  • Pick up colorful pottery from shop merchants who will spin you a yarn as you browse

Perched on a cliff-side overlooking the Mediterranean, the Amalfi Coast’s stunning beauty makes it Honeymoon Central. But whether you’ve just tied the knot or have a few decades of wedded bliss under your belt, charming coastal towns like Amalfi, Positano and Ravello will make you feel like a teenager again with their postcard-perfect winding roads and sparkling sea views.

This youthful zeal comes in handy when exploring narrow alleys, lanes, villas, churches and marvelous villa gardens. Getting lost in these enchanting villages is the only way to discover their real character, however, so don’t even think about hiring a car; driving round here is only for the brave.

    When to visit Amalfi Coast

Amalfi and its coastal neighbors pretty much shut down during winter, so plan to visit April through October—though you’ll have to share with the rest of the world.
