Why we choose Mandarin Oriental Munich

The mantra at this hotel: Everything is possible and there’s no “no”

  • The around-the-world wellness center has a Turkish bath, Finnish sauna and tropical shower
  • China Moon Roof Terrace offers 360-degree views of the city
  • Check into the Presidential Suite for its airy conservatory

Asia meets…Germany? Sounds odd, but somehow it works in the Munich outpost of the Mandarin Oriental brand. They’ve got the basics more than covered with five restaurants and bars, as well as a new fitness area, but the small-ish hotel really shines with its enchanting style.

Tower Suites have bags of character and remarkable views over the red rooftops of Munich.

What you need to know about the hotel

Combine neo-Renaissance charm, effortless elegance and trademark Mardarin Oriental service, and you get this Bavarian gem

  • The Rum Club not only offers rum tastings, but a grand selection of cigars from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and more
  • The building dates to 1875, and part of the old city wall still resides in the cellar
  • Restaurant Mark’s promises “relaxed formality” with changing daily menus and complimentary handmade sweets at meal’s end

We’ll say it: Germans are known for a lot of wonderful qualities, but warm
hospitality may not be at the top of that list. The Mandarin Oriental Munich seems to be on a mission to change that, however, with genuinely attentive service and a team of butlers waiting to turn your wish into their command. This revelation soon gives way to another: This elegant hotel beautifully balances old world charm with state-of-the-art technology. Yes, the hotel’s architecture may be Renaissance, but the amenities include Bang and Olufsen entertainment systems, as well as Bose iPod docking stations.

We highly recommend reserving one of the luxurious suites, especially the character-rich Tower Suites and, of course, the Presidential Suite. All have remarkable views over the red roofs of Munich.

Where is it and what's nearby

The picture-perfect city of Munich is big enough to occupy you for days, yet small enough to feel cozy

  • Take a fairytale castle tour of the 17th century Nymphenburg Castle, the opulent Linderhof Castle and renowned Neuschwanstein Castle—the inspiration for Disney’s Magic Kingdom
  • Viktualienmarkt, the original farmer’s market, is a gourmet destination with fresh produce, delicacies and, yes, a beer garden
  • The 4,000-seat Hofbräuhaus, the most famous beer hall in the world, has plenty of room for sipping a cold one

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, and its long royal tradition has resulted in breathtaking architecture and renown as a cultural hub, offering everything from centuries-old castles to the celebrated Bavarian Opera House to loads of art galleries. Luckily, Munich is a compact city, which makes it extremely convenient to explore everything this old-meets-new locale has to offer. The Mandarin Oriental is centrally located (right behind the Hofbräuhaus, in fact), yet tucked away on a side street that offers enviable

How to enjoy Munich

Every October, locals dressed in lederhosen and dirndls party with tourists in huge tents on the Theresienwiese fairground, swinging steins of lager while swaying and singing along to an oompah band

  • Visit the futuristic steel and glass BMW Museum located at the headquarters of the performance car manufacturer
  • Head out of town to see the fairytale towers of Bavaria’s many castles including Disney’s inspiration, Neuschwanstein, near Füssen
  • To source your own lederhosen or dirndl, head to the designer label fashion house, Lodenfrey, or the traditional costumier Angermaier

The, at times, raucous nature of the Oktoberfest belies the fact that Munich considers itself to be the Music Metropolis of the World. It has good cause for such a claim. The city is home to three opera houses, four major philharmonic and several chamber orchestras. The ornate Rococo Cuvilliés Theatre, which dates back to 1755, hosted Mozart’s first opera and the Olympia park is one of many local venues popular with international rock and pop acts.

The city center is marked by the grand square, the Marienplatz, which itself is dominated by the New Town Hall and the Glockenspiel Tower. At 11am and noon every day (as well as 5pm during the summer), the Glockenspiel’s 43 bells chime into life and play an accompaniment to a show by life-sized figures. Escape the crowds that the Glockenspiel draws by heading to the city’s vast park, the English Garden, where boating, cycling and even clothing are optional.

    When to visit Munich

The Oktoberfest usually takes place over two weeks at the end of September and beginning of October. It is one of the world’s largest fairs and includes fairgrounds, parades of locals in national dress and the beer tents, where locals and visitors alike sample the wares of Munich-based brewers.

  • Awards and accolades

Mark’s, the Mandarin Oriental Munich’s restaurant, has one Michelin Star at the hands of Chef Simon Larese.

  • A word from the hotel

Our cuisine is modern French with Asian influences, and we place a strong emphasis on fresh seasonal ingredients.
    Simon Larese, Executive Chef

  • We say

The Lobby Lounge is a real Munich hotspot where locals flock for top notch cocktails and fancy bar food.
