How to enjoy Berlin

Berlin has an almost idiosyncratic talent for combining quirky Bohemia with classy culture; gritty history and lovely green open spaces. It’s as easy to spend three days at one party as it is to enjoy a quiet Michelin-starred meal

  • Take a trip to the top of the Reichstag’s striking glass dome and enjoy 360° views of the city
  • The Jewish Museum’s shape suggests a broken Star of David and hosts heart-rending displays in memory of German Jews
  • Visit Museum Island, home to several world-class museums and exhibition spaces including the Pergamonmuseum

A good place to start exploring Berlin is in and around central Mitte. At one end you will find the iconic Brandenberg Gate which opens out onto the green expanse of Tiergarten Park. Nearby is the Reichstag, the impressive German Parliament building and the Peter Eisenmann moving memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The monument comprises a garden of thousands of columns of varying heights. Also close by is Humboldt University, where Einstein taught.

No visit to this city would be complete without seeing the remnants of the Berlin Wall, the physical embodiment of the Cold War that literally cut East from West, dividing families as well as politics. A piece about a mile long remains in the Friedrichshain district. Decorated with more than 100 murals it is a wonderful open air gallery. The other remaining symbol of this part of Berlin’s history is Checkpoint Charlie the former border crossing between East and West and witness to many ingenious escape attempts.
