Why we choose Villa Gallici

The 18th century Villa Gallici is a Provençal masterpiece furnished with antiques and sumptuous fabrics

  • Complimentary afternoon tea—with Mariage Frères teas and pastries—is served daily
  • Relax in the heated, outdoor swimming pool
  • This grand luxurious residence is set in 7 acres of landscaped gardens

The rooms tell you everything you need to know about Villa Gallici. The décor can only be described as extravagant, though the hotel calls it “Provençal boudoir fantasy” style. The spaces are large and bright, furnished with delightful period pieces and have all the modern comforts you’d expect at a five-star boutique. Conspicuous attention to detail, utterly lavish and unapologetically indulgent—that’s Villa Gallici.

What you need to know about the hotel

A five-minute walk from Aix en Provence, the hotel enjoys a countryside locale with no town noise

  • Everyone gets a VIP welcome, courtesy of a “welcome tray” with homemade delicacies, calissons, water, seasonal fruits and iced tea
  • The restaurant, which offers a butler to recommend the best wine pairings, becomes magical at night thanks to thousands of candles
  • Some rooms lead out onto private terraces and lavender-filled gardens

A stay at Villa Gallici is like a passport to another time and place. Each of the 22 rooms is furnished in a unique style, though they all overlook the lavender-scented garden. Most also have a private garden or terrace. There aren’t many amenities here—a small gym and an outdoor pool—but the French/Mediterranean restaurant stands out thanks to its inventive menu and seating options (on the terrace in the summer and by the roaring fire in the winter).

Where is it and what's nearby

Set on seven acres of gardens, Villa Gallici is a serene retreat in Provence

  • When in Aix, take “Cezanne’s walk,” which leads to the painter’s atelier and to the site where he grew up
  • Make a point of sampling the region’s famous wines: Château Lacoste, Château Simone and Château de Beaupré
  • Browse Saltiel Gallery, a longtime favorite of contemporary art lovers, where you can check out works by established and emerging talents

This exquisite country estate is close to the town center of Aix en Provence—an ancient city founded by the Roman Empire in 122 B.C.—but far enough away that you’re gently awakened by bird songs rather than honking horns. Aix en Provence, in the heart of Provence, is situated at the foot of the Sainte Victoire, a hill that inspired Zola and native son Cézanne. You can visit the town’s famous markets three times a week or look a little outside the area for more attractions. About 30 minutes from Aix en Provence are the sights of Marseille, and 45 minutes brings you to the Roman sites of Arles, Les baux en Provence, St. Remy en Provence, the Lubéron area and Avignon.

How to enjoy South of France

Stretching between Monaco and Toulon, the French Riviera offers visitors uninterrupted sunshine and elegance. With glorious beaches fringed by fragrant pines and promenades begging to be strolled, this is the place to see and be seen; the international watering hole of the Beautiful People

  • Dine on fresh oysters, lobster, shrimp or the local dish Bouillabaisse overlooking the picturesque harbor at Villefranche-sur-Mer
  • See the limestone ridge of Mont Saint Victoire close to Aix-en-Provence that features in several of Cézanne paintings
  • Saunter Nice’s Promenade des Anglais, shaded by palms it is perfect for people watching and contemplating the blue waters of the Bay of Angels

Even if you are gazing at the dry ochre earth and terracotta roofs of France’s Midi for the first time, you’ll be forgiven for thinking it all looks quite familiar. It is. You will have no doubt seen many of the views before hanging in various museums around the world captured in the paints of Cézanne, Renoir, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and more. Like the artists we think you’ll fall in love the region’s wonderful light and colorful fields of sunflowers and lavender.

Devote some time to Cannes. Whether rubbing shoulders with the stars at the Film Festival or simply enjoying some down time, the city’s designer boutiques, marina and beach all possess a level of poise and grace seldom found elsewhere.
