Why we choose Château Saint-Martin & Spa

The soul of Provence and the prestige of the French Riviera

  • One of the most anticipated events on the Riviera is the summer season opening of Le Saint-Martin, a symphony of epicurean perfection, with new Executive Chef Jean-Luc Lefrançois
  • The private helicopter pad makes for memorable entrances and exits
  • Hit the two clay tennis courts with a tennis pro in the summer

There’s no luxury quite like the French Riviera brand of luxury, and the Château Saint-Martin & Spa does it up right. Very right. The stunning property has a thousand-year history that will enthrall history buffs, while the quiet elegance of the grounds is guaranteed to transfix even jaded world travelers. It doesn’t come cheap, but you’ll be hard pressed to get the Château out of your head when you come home.

What you need to know about the hotel

A sun-warmed stone castle overlooks the azure Mediterranean

  • The private chapel’s history includes the storied 12th century Knights Templar
  • Wine tastings take place in the Castle tower or wine cellar carved into salty rocks (with 20,000+ bottles of wine)

Château Saint-Martin & Spa was built in 1936, but the fortified structure dates back to Roman times. Today it’s a chic masterpiece that caters to a very well-heeled crowd, though fortunately that crowd is quite small.

There are only 46 rooms, suites and villas here—all of them decorated with a nod to timeless elegance. The Junior Suites, with their balconies or terraces, are perfect for couples, while the villas are ideal for families (or duos who, like the frequent celebrity visitors, want a little more privacy). The all-natural spa offers everything from Sweet Spa Crystal (an entertaining, private steam shower) to yoga lessons and mommy-baby treatments. Food is hugely important here. In addition to the gastronomic restaurant Le Saint-Martin, L’Oliveraie, a summer grill which serves a legendary cuisine with local produce.

Where is it and what's nearby

Château Saint-Martin sits on 34 acres of private parkland in the heart of the Côte d’Azur

  • Ten minutes from the Château, Saint Paul de Vence is a much-visited village with medieval streets and many art galleries
  • Use the helicopter pad for a 15-minute transfer to glamorous Monaco, where you can gamble the evening away in high style
  • The hotel can organize a private yacht day trip to Saint Tropez, a perennial playground for the rich and famous

Set on more than 30 acres of pristine grounds with almost 300 olive trees, Château Saint-Martin & Spa hovers 1,300 feet above the sea for breathtaking views over the length of the French Riviera. Its strategic location made it attractive to leaders as far back as 350 AD, and its biggest claim to fame is as a Knights Templar stronghold. The Château isn’t the only local sight with ancient ties; you can easily explore the nearby Medieval towns of Eze, Gourdon and Biot. Other popular—and easily accessible—French Riviera destinations include Nice, Cannes, Monaco, Grasse and Antibes.

If you’re feeling adventurous, the concierge can arrange horseback riding, sailing, hiking, water skiing, diving and other action-packed activities.

How to enjoy South of France

Stretching between Monaco and Toulon, the French Riviera offers visitors uninterrupted sunshine and elegance. With glorious beaches fringed by fragrant pines and promenades begging to be strolled, this is the place to see and be seen; the international watering hole of the Beautiful People

  • Dine on fresh oysters, lobster, shrimp or the local dish Bouillabaisse overlooking the picturesque harbor at Villefranche-sur-Mer
  • See the limestone ridge of Mont Saint Victoire close to Aix-en-Provence that features in several of Cézanne paintings
  • Saunter Nice’s Promenade des Anglais, shaded by palms it is perfect for people watching and contemplating the blue waters of the Bay of Angels

Even if you are gazing at the dry ochre earth and terracotta roofs of France’s Midi for the first time, you’ll be forgiven for thinking it all looks quite familiar. It is. You will have no doubt seen many of the views before hanging in various museums around the world captured in the paints of Cézanne, Renoir, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and more. Like the artists we think you’ll fall in love the region’s wonderful light and colorful fields of sunflowers and lavender.

Devote some time to Cannes. Whether rubbing shoulders with the stars at the Film Festival or simply enjoying some down time, the city’s designer boutiques, marina and beach all possess a level of poise and grace seldom found elsewhere.
