Why we choose Hotel Amigo, a Rocco Forte hotel

Hotel Amigo is a cultural oasis in a prime location

  • View canvases from famed artists such as Courtens, Dansaert and Wagemans
  • Heated bathroom floors keep feet toasty
  • The recently introduced Martini Club has a huge cocktail list

Hotel Amigo is tailored and contemporary—as you would expect of a Rocco Forte Hotel—but with added charm and character thanks to a building with some interesting history. Another checkmark in the “plus” category: The cuisine benefits from the talents of Fulvio Pierangelini, a two Michelin-starred chef who consults for all Rocco Forte Hotels.

What you need to know about the hotel

A five-star boutique hotel in the heart of Brussels

  • The exclusive Blaton Suite features a 200-square-foot terrace with exceptional views over Brussels rooftops and the city hall
  • Among the hotel’s decorative touches: 18th century Flemish wall tapestries and lobby paving stones originally used in surrounding buildings
  • At the bar, treats include local specialties such as chocolate mousse, Brussels waffles, speculoos cookies, spicy hot chocolate, mulled wine and Champagne

Hotel Amigo, built by the Blaton family in 1957 ahead of the Universal Exhibition in 1958, has been given a delightfully contemporary makeover. Its red brick façade, done in Spanish Renaissance style, gives way to 154 rooms and 19 suites—all of them uniquely decorated. We’re especially fond of the large bathrooms, which have mosaic details and depictions of famous Hergé’s characters Tintin, Snowy the dog and Captain Haddock on the walls.

Making the hotel even more competitive in the luxury market are the fabulous restaurant and bar, as well as a new fitness center. And all this in the center of Brussels, the beating heart of Europe.

Where is it and what's nearby

An impressive location in the heart of Brussels, adjacent to the Grand Place

  • The Magritte Museum comprises more than 200 works from the surrealist artist—oils, drawings, sculptures and even vintage photographs
  • Take a guided tour of nearby Antwerp—the city of Rubens and diamonds—which departs right from the hotel
  • The Museum of Cacao and Chocolate is more than exhibits; there are also demonstrations by a master chocolatier and samples

Location-wise, it doesn’t get much better than the Hotel Amigo. Next to the Grand Place in the UNESCO Heritage Market Square area, it’s close to Brussels’ financial district and an easy walk to the antiques district of Le Sablon. Brussels has something for everyone—especially culture vultures who wish to dive into the city’s many museums. Whether you’re interested in Beaux Arts, history, architecture or costumes, there’s a museum for you. Brussels is also a gastronomic playground, featuring cuisines from across the globe.

How to enjoy Belgium

A trip to Belgium is the gastronomic equivalent of skiing in Aspen or surfing in Hawaii. The country is world class when it comes to culinary art and glitters in Michelin Stars. To put it simply, your tastebuds will love you

  • Belgium’s national sport is cycling. Visit the Paris-Roubaix pavé cobblestones and see why the race is nick-named the Hell of the North
  • Bruges is an exquisitely preserved medieval town just north of Brussels, where the charming architecture is reflected in the many lovely canals
  • Rather bizarrely, Brussels’ most popular tourist attraction is the Mannekin Pis. It is a statue of a small boy doing, well, what small boys do well

Various things bring together the northern Dutch-dialect speaking Flemish and southern French-speaking Walloons. One is cycling and, in particular, cycling legend Eddie Merckx. Another is a love a food. Mussels and fries (Mosselen Frituur or Moules Frites depending on where you order them) is one of the most famous national dishes. The fries are served with mayonnaise. Once you try it you will never use ketchup again.

The Belgians take their beer seriously too and none more so than the Trappist monks who brew six of the more than 400 varieties of beer made in the country. Take a pilgrimage to visit a brewery such as Achel in the north or Rochefort in the south. In the nation’s capital, Brussels, see the powerhouse of European politics at the European Parliament, stock up with the world’s best chocolate in the lanes around the Grand Place and visit the giant molecule, the Atomium, built for the 1958 World Fair.

    When to visit Belgium

Visit in September to sample the wares of Belgium’s top breweries at the Beer Weekend in Brussels. Head over to the Parc du Cinquantenaire and catch the annual Waiters’ Race, where professional Garçons sprint while carrying trays of glasses and bottles.

  • We say

A fabulous location right next to the beautiful Grand Place in the center of Brussels.

  • A word from the hotel

Brussels is famous for its charming Christmas markets, but why not visit in August for the beautiful Tapis de Fleurs festival, when the floor of the Grand Place is transformed into a living carpet of fresh flowers.
