Why we choose Sofitel Vienna

Prepare yourself for a total departure from what you’d expect from a traditional Viennese hotel

  • A vertical garden extends 600 square meters up the hotel’s back wall
  • Customizable running routes take you to Danube Canal and Stadtpark

This hotel sticks out like a Pollack painting in a Renoir exhibit—which may be just the ticket if you love the newest and slickest thing on the market. But if you’re a firm believer in classic opulence, this cutting-edge masterpiece will annoy rather than delight.

What you need to know about the hotel

Up for something new that doesn’t sacrifice luxury? This Sofitel fits the bill

  • Ceilings in the public spaces are their own attraction, with bright, multi-colored designs by a multi-media artist
  • Traditional Viennese coffee gets elevated, thanks to a special blend created for the hotel by the Old Vienna Coffee Roasters
  • Splurge on the Suite Magnifique, a luxe winner with stellar views, a Turkish bath and ultra-large Hollywood bed

When you think of a Vienna luxury hotel, a renovated palace might come to mind. But the Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom is an avant-garde tour de force set down in the middle of one of the most timeless cities in the world. Rather than housing a collection of contemporary art, the entire structure is a tribute to the genre. The 182 monochromatic rooms and suites, each with views over Vienna, are done in either white, grey or black. Not mostly white, grey or black—all white, grey or black. It’s startling at first, but we grew to love the concept.

Where is it and what's nearby

Vienna is a city where rich history meets a bold new world of style and a lively street culture

  • Go shopping with the pros in the 7th District, where stylists take you to the trendiest designer boutiques
  • The Hofburg Palace is a cultural smorgasbord, with several museums, the Austrian National Library, the Imperial Chapel and the Augustinian Church
  • The vibrant Vienna Museum Quarter offers museums like the famous Leopold Museum, a variety of restaurants and cool bars

Vienna is synonymous with old-world glamour and sophistication. Once the home of the great Habsburg Empire, its many magnificent buildings and monuments testify to its historic importance. And while today’s Vienna remains in many ways a charming peek into the past, depending on your taste, you’ll also discover plenty to see and do that’s right here in the modern world.

Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom is a five-minute walk from St. Stephens Cathedral—one of city’s most famous landmarks. Another five minutes brings you to the Prater with its giant Ferris wheel (another landmark). So while it’s close to some popular destinations, the hotel isn’t right in the middle of all of the tourist hoopla. Good thing or bad thing? You decide.

How to enjoy Vienna

Culturally speaking, not only is Vienna rich, it is positively opulent. Majestic architecture, eye-catching sculpture and musical heritage that reads like a Who’s Who of classical music for the past few millennia

  • See the graceful white Lipizzaner stallions in action at the 16th century Spanish Riding School
  • Enjoy upmarket shopping in the former 19th century palace, Palais Corso, at the Ringstrassen Galerien
  • For outrageously frescoed ceilings, visit the baroque State Hall of the National Library, Nationalbibliothek

Perhaps the nicest way to get to know this gorgeous city is through its coffee houses. Each has a personality of its own and menus that vary from ham and eggs to exquisite pastries although all offer delicious coffee, of course. Music is very much part of Vienna’s essence. The Vienna Philharmonic runs a packed program featuring the work of (local heroes) Mozart, Haydn, Mahler and others. The State Opera is sublime, not to mention the heart-meltingly beautiful Vienna Boys’ Choir. Even the city’s churches regularly host performances of Bach and Händel.

No introduction to Vienna would be complete without mention of its architecture. See gothic churches such as Stephansdom with its ornately tiled roof. The Museum of Fine Arts (Kunsthistoriches) is lavishly baroque, with marble, stucco ornamentation and gold-leaf throughout. Its collection, including works by Bruegel, Caravaggio and Rubens is no less impressive. The Österreichische Galerie, has a collection featuring Klimt, as well as Impressionists, Expressionists and contemporary art. Part of Belvedere Palace, the 18th century summer home of Prince Eugene, the flamboyant interiors and formal gardens are worth exploring in their own right.

  • We say

In our Luxury Rooms, leave the lower left window open. When you wake up in the morning, the first thing you’ll see is the sun rising over St. Stephen's Cathedral.
