The Ritz-Carlton Vienna is all about unexpected indulgences. The hotel pool, for example, is a 60-foot steel beauty with gorgeous design and piped in underwater music to boost relaxation. What you need to know about the hotel

New and old converge in a culturally protected façade that gives way to a modern interior

  • The 2,900-square-foot Presidential Suite features historic ceiling frescoes from a former palace, a fireplace and an elegant library
  • The spa offers personalized treatments in posh suites and a wellness area with a sauna, steam bath and heated relaxation beds
  • DSTRIKT Steakhouse serves the best selection of charcoal-grilled Austrian meats

The new Ritz-Carlton in Vienna is the ultimate recycling project. Located in four former palaces dating to the mid-19th century, the hotel has kept the glamour and sumptuousness of the palaces and infused contemporary technology and comforts. The 202 rooms and suites are elegantly furnished, and some of them include balconies or terraces to take in the famed Ring Boulevard right outside the hotel. We recommend splurging on Club-level rooms if you’re interested in maximizing privacy and service. A remarkable indoor pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, spa and four restaurants and bars round out the offerings.

Where is it and what's nearby

This Vienna luxury hotel has pride of place on the Ringstrasse, the city’s most elegant boulevard

  • Schönbrunn Castle’s palace and gardens offer attractions such as authentically furnished residential rooms and a scenic garden labyrinth
  • Visit Mozarthaus to learn more about the composer’s time in Vienna, including his relationship to the Freemasons and his passion for games
  • Guided tours of the Vienna State Opera showcase fascinating information about the company, its history, the opera business and the building’s architecture

The Ritz-Carlton’s location is the best of both worlds: a city center setting that’s actually pretty quiet but within walking distance of Vienna’s main attractions. And speaking of attractions, there’s a lot to discover here. Known for centuries as a cultural and artistic hub, Vienna is still a haven for music lovers (especially opera buffs). It also has fascinating architecture, a rich imperial history and a wealth of parks, gardens and museums.

How to enjoy Vienna

Culturally speaking, not only is Vienna rich, it is positively opulent. Majestic architecture, eye-catching sculpture and musical heritage that reads like a Who’s Who of classical music for the past few millennia

  • See the graceful white Lipizzaner stallions in action at the 16th century Spanish Riding School
  • Enjoy upmarket shopping in the former 19th century palace, Palais Corso, at the Ringstrassen Galerien
  • For outrageously frescoed ceilings, visit the baroque State Hall of the National Library, Nationalbibliothek

Perhaps the nicest way to get to know this gorgeous city is through its coffee houses. Each has a personality of its own and menus that vary from ham and eggs to exquisite pastries although all offer delicious coffee, of course. Music is very much part of Vienna’s essence. The Vienna Philharmonic runs a packed program featuring the work of (local heroes) Mozart, Haydn, Mahler and others. The State Opera is sublime, not to mention the heart-meltingly beautiful Vienna Boys’ Choir. Even the city’s churches regularly host performances of Bach and Händel.

No introduction to Vienna would be complete without mention of its architecture. See gothic churches such as Stephansdom with its ornately tiled roof. The Museum of Fine Arts (Kunsthistoriches) is lavishly baroque, with marble, stucco ornamentation and gold-leaf throughout. Its collection, including works by Bruegel, Caravaggio and Rubens is no less impressive. The Österreichische Galerie, has a collection featuring Klimt, as well as Impressionists, Expressionists and contemporary art. Part of Belvedere Palace, the 18th century summer home of Prince Eugene, the flamboyant interiors and formal gardens are worth exploring in their own right.
