We suggest

Our top choice is a Deluxe Room—with a balcony, of course.

What you need to know about the hotel

Revel in grand, historic luxury complemented by state-of-the-art technology and outstanding service

  • Grand Spa No605’s range of treatments is among the most extensive in Vienna; it also offers sauna, steam bath and relaxation zone
  • The massive Presidential Suite has phenomenal Ringstrasse views, a dining room that seats eight, grand entry hall and its own study
  • Gourmet restaurant Le Ciel, a two-toque eatery, offers memorable French dining on china and silver specially created for the restaurant

Built in 1870, this classic Viennese-style hotel has achieved icon status by continually upgrading its look while retaining a noble feel. The Grand Hotel Wien is decked out in exquisite fabrics and rare antiques, but you’ll also find HD entertainment in the 205 spacious rooms. There isn’t a huge line-up of amenities here—the spa is a standout—but its dining scene is worth a stay alone. Choose from four award-winning restaurants serving everything from sushi to French plates, as well as two bars.

Where is it and what's nearby

Located on Vienna’s prestigious Ringstrasse boulevard in the heart of the city

  • The Viennese tradition of a coffee-and-cake snack is enhanced by the original Grand Guglhupf cake, only available at the hotel
  • Literally steps from the hotel, up-market shopping destination the Ringstrassen-Galerien presents a selection of designer label shoes, jewelry and watches
  • Vienna State Opera, home of the legendary Vienna Opera Ball, offers guided tours of the architecturally interesting facilities along with historical tidbits

Grand Hotel Wien is within a short stroll of the storied Vienna State Opera and the shopper’s haven of Kaerntner Street—both of which will get you off to a good start in the city. Since Vienna is known as the city of music, it’s no surprise to find so many first-class music halls here (most within walking distance of the Grand Hotel Wien). In addition to the Opera, there’s Vienna Konzerhaus, Musikverein and Vereinigte to name just a few. Vienna is also known for its enormous historical, artistic and cultural offerings, including the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, Natural History Museum Vienna, Albertina Museum and the Liechtenstein Museum.

How to enjoy Vienna

Culturally speaking, not only is Vienna rich, it is positively opulent. Majestic architecture, eye-catching sculpture and musical heritage that reads like a Who’s Who of classical music for the past few millennia

  • See the graceful white Lipizzaner stallions in action at the 16th century Spanish Riding School
  • Enjoy upmarket shopping in the former 19th century palace, Palais Corso, at the Ringstrassen Galerien
  • For outrageously frescoed ceilings, visit the baroque State Hall of the National Library, Nationalbibliothek

Perhaps the nicest way to get to know this gorgeous city is through its coffee houses. Each has a personality of its own and menus that vary from ham and eggs to exquisite pastries although all offer delicious coffee, of course. Music is very much part of Vienna’s essence. The Vienna Philharmonic runs a packed program featuring the work of (local heroes) Mozart, Haydn, Mahler and others. The State Opera is sublime, not to mention the heart-meltingly beautiful Vienna Boys’ Choir. Even the city’s churches regularly host performances of Bach and Händel.

No introduction to Vienna would be complete without mention of its architecture. See gothic churches such as Stephansdom with its ornately tiled roof. The Museum of Fine Arts (Kunsthistoriches) is lavishly baroque, with marble, stucco ornamentation and gold-leaf throughout. Its collection, including works by Bruegel, Caravaggio and Rubens is no less impressive. The Österreichische Galerie, has a collection featuring Klimt, as well as Impressionists, Expressionists and contemporary art. Part of Belvedere Palace, the 18th century summer home of Prince Eugene, the flamboyant interiors and formal gardens are worth exploring in their own right.
