Why we choose Belmond Palacio Nazarenas

The intimate Belmond Palacio Nazarenas is a carefully restored former convent

  • The only hotel in the city with butlers for all guests
  • The movie library is filled with Academy Award-winning films
  • There’s a lovely old chapel for weddings or private events
  • All of the suites are oxygen-enriched to avoid altitude sickness

Belmond Palacio Nazarenas’ claim to fame is its ultra-personalized service. In fact, this brand new hotel provides individual butlers who do everything from unpack your luggage to prepare a pisco sour (and teach you to do the same). It’s also worth mentioning that Belmond worked with Peru’s National Institute of Culture to bring the 16th-century building back to life. Everything has been carefully preserved, and that care shows.

What you need to know about the hotel

Once an Inca palace, the hotel is now a contemporary haven for adventurous luxury seekers

  • Every suite has unique features: perhaps a view over an ancient patio or private access via a magical Inca passageway
  • Inside the largest of seven cloistered terraces is an outdoor heated swimming pool—the city’s first
  • A traditional cart with fruits, vegetables and herbs is kept by the pool so you can make (request) fresh juice or mixed drinks

There are only 55 suites in the posh Belmond Palacio Nazarenas—small in number but big on “wow” factor. Their tall ceilings make the large rooms seem even bigger, and the views over the historic patio, the hillside site of Sacsayhuaman or Cuzco’s cathedral are showstoppers. While the atmosphere is classic, there’s no shortage of high-tech essentials like satellite TV and Bose sound systems. You can even use a hotel iPad during your stay. The suites—all of which are individually decorated—are located in both the ancient and newly-reconstructed areas of the hotel.

The hotel is full-service, with a restaurant and bar plus a spa inspired by Inca and Andean culture that specializes in aromatherapy.

Where is it and what's nearby

An urban retreat in the heart of legendary Cuzco, surrounded by ancient history

  • Nazarenas Square, in front of the hotel, has a magnificent baroque church, world-class pre-Columbian art museum and chic restaurants
  • Inca sites are a must—especially the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, Puca Pucara (theRed Fort) and Quenqo (the sacred amphitheatre)
  • Take Calle Hatun Rumiyuq to the Archbishop’s residence for its collection of historic paintings—including one showing Belmond Palacio Nazarenas as a private home

Belmond Palacio Nazarenas has a fascinating history that includes uses as a convent and Inca palace. After years of extensive restoration, it begins a new chapter as one of the area’s most exclusive hotels. Part of the draw may be the location—on a tranquil plaza behind Cuzco’s main square—or the Inca stones and cloistered courtyards that remain from its previous incarnations.

Because the hotel is in the heart of Cuzco, it’s within walking distance of most sightseeing destinations and a short drive from the Inca ruins that bring people to this part of Peru—including Sacsayhuaman, a UNESCO World Heritage site

How to enjoy Peru

For an image that will remain locked in your heart for all time, watch the sun rise from your vantage point at the top of Machu Picchu, it will feel like you are on top of the world in more ways than one

  • Take a plane over the ancient desert of Nazca and try to unravel the meaning of the Nazca lines – giant rock drawings that can only be seen from the sky
  • For one of the most colorful markets in the world, visit Pisac in the Sacred Valley of the Incas on a Sunday when local artisans sell bright textiles
  • For a unique insight into an alternative culture, see the floating villages of the Uros on the world’s highest lake, Lake Titicaca

Visit the oldest continuously inhabited city of the Americas, former capital of the Inca empire, Cusco. The ancient civilization’s rich heritage can still be seen throughout the city, holding out against the Catholic stamp of the Spanish conquistadores. Explore the ruins of Qoricancha, the Sun Temple, and the walled city of Sacsayhuaman, the site of the 1536 battle in which Pizarro’s men battled the Incas.

The ancient Inca mountain citadel of Machu Picchu is a must of course. How you get there depends on the strength of your cardiovascular system and spirit of adventure. One route will involve a train and a smart hotel. Another includes a bedroom made of canvas and strong walking boots. If you choose to hike the Inca Trail, you will need a guide and permission (the government limits how many people can do this each day). Treks vary from three to seven days.
