Why we choose Fasano Rio de Janeiro

The Fasano’s mid-century vibe recalls Ipanema’s glamorous debut onto the world stage

  • Personal butlers are trained to over-deliver
  • Beach service includes loungers, umbrellas, water, magazines and a sunscreen selection
  • Wallpaper magazine ranks Baretto-Londra the #1 hotel bar in the world

You’ll feel like The Girl from Ipanema when you enter this hip, sophisticated hotel. The Fasano, which debuted in 2007, was the first from-scratch hotel project helmed by Philippe Starck, who opted for a fun 50s and 60s style that can be seen in everything from the furniture to the exclusive vintage uniforms. Also on tap: great cuisine and understated but impeccable service. The Bossa Nova era never looked so good.

We suggest

Choose a Deluxe Oceanfront Room on one of the higher floors. The rooms are on the small side so upgrade for more space.

What you need to know about the hotel

This designer luxury hotel’s retro aesthetic hides ultra-modern conveniences

  • The rooftop infinity pool offers a never-before-seen angle on Ipanema Beach, encompassing Arpoador, Two Brothers Mountain and Corcovado
  • Restaurant Fasano Al Mare’s Italian menu, created by a 3-Michelin-starred chef, is an homage to the Fasano family’s favorite flavors
  • The Oceanfront Deluxe Suite combines high-tech necessities like Geneva iPod docks with gracious amenities such as a private bar and two rain showers

Noted designer Philippe Starck took an international approach to the Fasano Rio de Janeiro, importing white marble from Greece, yellow onyx from China and centuries-old red brick from Argentina. The result is modern sophistication. All 89 rooms and suites feature balconies and hardwood floors, though some guests may deem them a bit on the small side. If you want more space, opt for an oceanfront suite, which adds not only breathing room but even better views.

One of the things the hotel hangs its hat on is gastronomy, and you won’t be disappointed with the offerings from the three restaurants and lounges. As for leisure, the full-service spa includes a long list of ways to unwind—a fitness center, for example, and the exclusive rooftop Vichy Shower Room. It’s a nice complement to the infinity pool’s panoramic views.

Where is it and what's nearby

In the heart of Ipanema, the hotel has a coveted address overlooking Ipanema Beach

  • Get a “taste” of the area by sipping coconut water on Ipanema Beach and then indulging in açaí with guaraná syrup
  • The best views of the city—Christ the Redeemer, Tijuca Forest, beaches and bays—can be found atop Sugarloaf Mountain
  • Rua Visconde de Piraja is the place for upscale shopping in Ipanema, or head for Rio’s chic São Conrado Fashion Mall

From its stately location on Avenida Vieira Souto, Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro has pride of place on the legendary Ipanema Beach and is surrounded by cultural options, boutiques and top bars and restaurants. It’s also exceptionally close to another storied beach: the Copacabana.

Rio is synonymous with white sand and a Carnival-like environment—and those cliches aren’t far off. There are, in fact, beaches for every day of the year, and what you’ve heard about itsy-bitsy Brazilian bikinis is true. Locals are known for their sunny, welcoming attitude, a trait that makes it especially fun to explore everything the area has to offer, from museums to natural wonders to historic downtown neighborhoods with cobblestone streets, soaring churches and fabulous architecture.

How to enjoy Rio de Janeiro

No matter whether you have two left feet and a shy temperament, the infectious rhythms of Samba and Bossa Nova will soon have you shaking those hips in Brazil’s glorious beachside party town

  • You can see the outstretched arms of Christ the Redeemer from almost everywhere in Rio, although that means it can also see you
  • There are plenty of tall, tan and lovely girls on the beach at Ipanema, see if you can work out which one they’ve been singing about
  • The beachside bars of Leblon are ideal for enjoying Brazil’s refreshing favourite cocktail, Caipirinha

According to Brazilian artist, Vik Muniz, where you choose to sit on Rio’s beach says a lot about you. At one end are the surfers and the beautiful people. Head further along and you reach the stretch favoured by gays. Next are the politicos and the communists. Next the artists, writers, intellectuals and so on. Everyone has a niche. This doesn’t necessarily fall out along socio-economic strata where favela dwellers can share the sand with millionaires from Leblon.

To see Rio in all its glory head to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. The cable car will whisk you to the top where you’ll be able to see the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the Tijuca Forest and the favelas of Babylonia. For an alternative birds-eye view, charter a helicopter and a personal tour guide to point out the main sights, including the key locations of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

When to visit Rio de Janeiro

To enjoy everything that Rio has to offer in a hedonistic fiesta of delight, visit during carnival in February

  • A word from the hotel

For a quieter visit come in November. It’s sunny during the day, but not hot, and the evenings bring a lovely breeze.
    Cristiana Kastrup, General Manager

  • We say

Sexy hotel right on Ipanema Beach. You get great views, especially from the fabulous bar and pool on the top floor.
