We suggest

Any room category as long as it’s got a view of the falls.

What you need to know about the hotel

Modeled after a Colonial-meets-native residence, this classic Belmond property blends into its dazzling natural surroundings

  • One major element that gives the hotel an edge: it offers rooms facing Iguassu Falls—one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature
  • At the hotel’s heart is a remarkable swimming pool with a shallow moat running around the edge, heated for year-round enjoyment
  • Bar Tarobá’s verandah is sunset central, plus it offers live nightly entertainment to accompany your cocktails

The Belmond Hotel das Cataratas has an arresting Colonial-Portuguese style that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into the 19th century. Its 177 rooms and 16 suites, divided between three sections, aren’t huge (they start at less than 80 square feet), but the signature décor features a simple, unfussy style that’s warm and relaxing. And with all of the action centered outdoors, you probably won’t be puttering around your room much, anyway.

The first-class amenities here include the Cataratas Spa, an indulgent retreat focusing on local products and traditional techniques, and four dining and lounge destinations that specialize in both local and international cuisine.

Where is it and what's nearby

For sheer “wow” factor, it doesn’t get much better than a UNESCO World Heritage site

  • Macuco safari boat tours on the Iguassu River deliver breathtaking views of the falls
  • Skip the crowds. Hotel guests get exclusive private access to the park before and after hours
  • Calling all adrenaline junkies: Rafting the Iguaçu River includes a patch of exhilarating Class 3+ rapids

The Belmond Hotel das Cataratas is located within over 457,000 acres of preserved rainforest called Iguassu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. Since it’s practically an extension of the hotel, you can’t come to Cataratas without exploring it. Found along the Iguassu River Basin, the park is the last extensive area of Atlantic Rainforest in southern Brazil. Not only is it home to the Iguassu Waterfalls, but it contains hundreds of species of flora and fauna, such as pumas, tapirs, spotted jaguars, giant otters and giant anteaters.

There are many ways to explore the area, from river tours to guided moonlit walks to trail runs. Find what speaks to you, and get out there!

How to enjoy Iguassu National Park

Best known for one of the world’s most spectacular, crescent-moon waterfalls, the Iguassu National Park is a stunning World Heritage site spanning the border between Brazil and Argentina

  • Charter a helicopter for unrivalled views of the 1.5 mile wide cascade and for a bird’s eye view of the point where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet
  • For a rare and precious experience, take a walking tour of the Iguassu Falls during a full moon for the ethereal beauty of a full moon rainbow
  • Get up close and personal with a boat ride into the mist. Tip: you will get wet, very very wet

Iguassu is one of those places that no matter how many times you visit, you can’t fail to be awed by the sheer power and beauty of nature. The Falls themselves stretch for a mile and a half and comprise literally hundreds of cascades, with names like Devil’s Throat and the Three Musketeers. Tumbling for more than 260 feet, they roar, sparkle in the sun and throw up soft clouds of mist that in turn create multiple vivid rainbows.

The Park provides plenty of opportunity for exploration and adventure. Eco-tours head into the lush subtropical jungle, home to coatis, swallows and brightly-colored butterflies. Your need for an adrenaline fix will be more than sated with the opportunities for white water rafting and rappelling down the side of the Falls. Yes, that is descending the face of the Falls, suspended by nothing more than a rope. Enough said on the matter.

When to visit Iguassu National Park

December to February can be extremely hot and June to August can be cool enough to require a jacket. Rain is possible at any time but March and November are both a good bet for brighter days.

  • You need to know

Private cars aren’t allowed within the National Park. Use the hotel’s car service and forget the hassle. Otherwise you’ll need to park outside the perimeter and take the scheduled shuttle to and from the hotel.

  • A word from the hotel

You need a three-night stay to really experience the hotel, the site and the highlight tours.
    Celso D. Valle, General Manager

  • We say

Take a helicopter trip over the falls.
