Why we choose Belmond La Samanna

A chic Caribbean resort of golden sands and crystalline waters

  • The star attraction: a beautiful, uncrowded beach
  • Recline on a beachfront bed during the signature Caligula dinner
  • Improve your backhand at the Peter Burwash Tennis Academy

St. Martin is a unique island that delivers the best of both the French and Dutch worlds—from aesthetics to gastronomy to entertainment to lifestyle. The Belmond La Samanna, is a long-time favorite that was recently overhauled to stay current with facilities and technologies. Meaning there’s no need to sacrifice, say, your iHome music system in the name of authentic tropical décor.

We suggest

Beach front or plunge pool suites are great, or one of the spacious villas.

What you need to know about the hotel

Wake up to spectacular ocean views from St. Martin’s best beach

  • The eight private villas are equipped with sea-view infinity pools and the convenience of a private butler and chef
  • Reserve a luxe poolside bamboo cabana, complete with wraparound sofa beds, wine or Champagne, skincare products, loaded iPods and personal wait staff
  • La Cave is an atmospheric wine cellar where you can design your own tasting menu (and wine pairings) with the chef

It’s among the only real luxury resorts on the island, so it’s a good thing the Belmond La Samanna gets the job done. The resort sprawls over 55 acres of ocean front property, and its Mediterranean-inspired architecture includes 27 rooms, 56 suites and eight villas—each with a private balcony or terrace.

When not basking in the great views, try out the two outdoor pools, tennis academy, spa, fitness center with Pilates studio and onsite water sports facility. Hungry? There are four restaurants and bars, as well as a remarkable wine cellar for private dinners.

Where is it and what's nearby

An oceanfront playground on St. Martin set within tropical gardens

  • Stroll charming Marigot, the capital of St. Martin’s French side, to discover gas lamps, sidewalk cafes, and traditional Creole gingerbread-trimmed houses
  • Diving and snorkeling trips arranged through the resort’s Water Sports Cabana are popular ways to discover the island’s underwater treasures
  • Dutch-side Philipsburg offers shops from Tiffany to Tommy (Hilfiger) on Front Street, while Sint Rose Shopping Mall houses Cartier and Lalique

The most interesting thing about St. Martin is its two completely different cultures: Dutch and French. There’s a Dutch side and a French side of the island, but it’s not like they’re separated by a military line of demarcation. The two cultures merge beautifully, offering haute cuisine and a laid-back Dutch atmosphere throughout the island—not to mention Caribbean charm.

The island has nearly 40 beaches to choose from, as well as plenty of water-based activities. The resort can schedule a snorkeling trip to search for sea turtles, or if you prefer to explore the crystal clear waters in luxury, charter Belmond La Samanna’s Italian motorboat, complete with open bar, for a full- or half-day excursion.

How to enjoy St. Martin

Part French-speaking (Saint Martin), part-Dutch (Sint Maarten), this island is the Belgium of the Caribbean. Unlike Belgium, however, St Martin enjoys year-round sunshine and a taste for Caribbean spice and partying

  • For stunning views across the entire island, climb to the lookout post at the top of the 1,400 feet Paradise Peak
  • Race a real America’s cup yacht in the St Maarten 12 Meter Challenge, departing from Bobby’s Marina in Philipsburg
  • Saddle-up and head out on a hack to explore some of St Martin’s most beautiful bays against the soundtrack of gently clopping hooves

St Martin has 37 of the most picture-perfect beaches. Dazzling white sands lie soft and clean against the ebb and flow of clear turquoise seas. Take your camera to record the stunning beauty of Orient Beach and your beach ball to join in the fun on Pinel Island. There are plenty of great spots for scuba, snorkeling, swimming and simply sun-bathing too.

Perhaps reflecting the exclusive nature of this island, the shopping is exquisite. Visit duty-free Little Switzerland to browse brands such as Tiffany & Co, Tissot and Michael Kors. In the glamorous West Indies Mall on Marigot’s Waterfront, you will find labels such as Yves Saint Laurent, Cartier and Gucci.
