Why we choose Sugar Beach

We can’t argue with the resort’s claim that theirs is the spot where heaven meets earth

  • Each mountainside accommodation has its own plunge pool
  • A professional “rummelier” helps you select native and international rums
  • Practice lounging: There’s butler service in every accommodation

Sugar Beach—formerly The Jalousie Plantation—is as sweet as its name. Noteworthy accommodations that include walled gardens and private pools are a good place to start, though the postcard-perfect setting is also worth a mention. The resort provides plenty of reasons to get up and go and just as many reasons to keep your posterior glued to a lounge chair.

We suggest

We love the mountainside accommodation which still has full ocean views.

What you need to know about the hotel

A blend of colonial charm and top amenities make this resort a perpetual favorite with luxury travelers

  • Sweat it out at the spa’s unique temascal—an Amerindian steam room.
  • Inject a little fun into your fitness routine with onsite Caribbean dance classes
  • The Great Room’s personalized tasting menu serves up haute cuisine your way

Plantation style meets the 21st century at Sugar Beach. The design is a nod to the fact that the 1992 resort was built on the site of an 18th century sugar plantation. The property underwent a two-year, $100 million transformation starting in 2010 that resulted in a new name and new accommodations: luxury beachfront bungalows. All of the rooms, villas and bungalows are gorgeous, but we recommend the beachfront bungalows for the simple reason that you’re literally steps from the turquoise Caribbean.

Making the stay even more “ahh”-worthy is the Rainforest Spa, with its seven treehouse treatment rooms and a skin care clinic perched on a stream.

Where is it and what's nearby

A tucked-away treasure with easy access to breathtaking landscapes and outdoor adventure to write home about

  • Tour the world’s only drive-in volcano and soak in the malodorous but beneficial sulfur springs in nearby Soufriere
  • Enjoy a rainforest hike in the Edmond Forest Reserve and swim in the stunning En Bas Saut Falls
  • Sugar Beach’s Dive Center prepares guests to explore the crystal waters of Anse des Pitons and the National Marine Reserve

Known as “The Helen of the West Indies,” the small island of St. Lucia is definitely in the running for most beautiful in the Caribbean. Only 27 miles long, it still manages to offer forests, volcanic mountains and beaches that you can explore all in one day if you wish. Sugar Beach encompasses all of these landscapes. Its name hints at the beach location, but it’s also set within 100 acres of lush rainforest and surrounded by Val des Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How to enjoy St. Lucia

You don’t have to be married to experience the romance of the world’s leading honeymoon destination. It will be love at first sight of the island’s perfect white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters

  • Tour the Sulphur Springs and enjoy the bubbling spectacle of the world’s only drive-in volcano
  • Charter a yacht to explore the island’s secret coves and enjoy the best views of the stunning 2,000 ft twin peaks, Les Pitons
  • Admire the multi-coloured Diamond Falls and benefit from their therapeutic mineral waters in Diamond Falls Mineral Baths Spa

This small Windward Island, it measures just 27 miles by 14, is one the gems of the Caribbean with lush rainforests, pristine beaches and an enticing lapis lazuli sea. Cool, elegant plantation-style architecture sits comfortably among glorious tropical gardens ablaze with the colors and aromas of hibiscus, orchids and bougainvillea.

Opportunities for true relaxation abound. Sip refreshing coconut cocktails from the edge of an infinity pool, shaded by gently swaying palms and soothed by the murmur of the ocean. Swim leisurely over stunning coral reefs as clown fish dart through slow-dancing anemones. Stroll across lush fairways and fine tune your putting on the beautifully manicured greens of the island’s three golf courses.
