How to enjoy Nevis

Shaped a little like a sombrero with a conical peak in its center, Nevis only covers 36 square miles, but is packed with Caribbean allure. The lush center hosts plantation style elegance, while the coast offers beaches straight from paradise

  • Take time out for afternoon tea in the elegant surroundings of one of the island’s five luxurious plantation inns
  • Visit the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. The face on your $10 bill, he was the first US Secretary of the Treasury
  • Explore the capital Charlestone to see the elaborate gingerbread verandas and latticework of the town’s older buildings

One of the first things to strike you about Nevis is the island’s amazing atmosphere. It will stay with you throughout your visit and remain a lingering essence after your departure. The fact is, Nevis seems to have an aura of calm and poise, like that of an elegant ballet dancer whose every move is the embodiment of grace. That is not to say the island misses out on vibrant fun. There is plenty to do from hiking in the rainforest to golf, sailing, snorkeling and diving. It’s just that everywhere holds a sense of calm.

To get away from it all, head to the beach. Most of the pristine beaches are good for swimming and the palm edged soft sands need little more than a beach towel and great book for the ultimate chilled afternoon. For romantic seclusion, stroll along the appropriately named Lovers Beach at sunset. If you love golf, you are in for a treat. Nevis hosts one of Robert Trent Jones Jr’s first Caribbean courses. The 18-hole links at Pinney’s Beach also offers stunning views to near neighbour, St Kitts.
