Why we choose Hermitage Bay

An intimate, private boutique experience in Antigua

  • Produce comes from the resort’s own organic garden
  • Wake up with morning yoga, meditation and Pilates classes
  • Beach service includes the usual chairs and towels plus extras like Champagne

Hermitage Bay is an adult, all-inclusive hotel for travelers who want complete privacy in a setting that’s all beach and sea views. Menus that change daily, Champagne and Prosecco, morning exercise classes, afternoon snacks and cocktail hour canapés: These are just a few of the “standard” perks. Come for the ultra-luxe service and amenities, stay for the aqua-colored waters and white-sand beaches—and the lack of other people’s kids.

What you need to know about the hotel

Hermitage Bay is a five-star oasis that takes the shape of a tranquil, hillside resort

  • The Garden Spa’s Dorissima color rituals, designed to correspond to the chakra systems, include gentle colored lighting, soft music and aromatherapy
  • On the main pool deck, the culinary staff offers cooking courses and demonstrations that feature resort-grown produce and Caribbean flair
  • Hillside Pool Suites’ outdoor living spaces boast wrap-around covered patios with spacious day beds, love seats, dining tables and plantation chairs

There are just 25 private villas within Hermitage Bay, but what a collection they’ve amassed. All accommodations have open floor plans, outdoor showers and screened louvers instead of doors and windows, giving them the feeling of modern, high-end “tree-houses.” You can pick from hillside or beachfront cottages; dip into your private pool in a villa on the bluff or fall asleep to the sounds of the sea in your oceanside suite.

The resort is set up to coddle a small number of guests, but the amenities are impressive enough for a much larger crowd. Among the highlights: a long, secluded beach, Garden Spa and water sports team. But what guests really remember is dining in the multi-tiered alfresco restaurant (or by the pool, in the lounge, on the beach, etc), where you’ll enjoy made-to-order meals from a menu that changes every day.

Where is it and what's nearby

Though offering peaceful seclusion, this seaside Antiguan resort is easily accessible

  • Tour an authentic Antiguan produce farm, seeing and tasting tropical fruits like West Indian cherry, guava, and 14 different types of mango
  • Dockyard at English Harbour, named for Admiral Lord Nelson, was built in 1725 and is the last Georgian dockyard still in operation
  • Sail to Bird Island, Green Island and Cades Reef, or opt for a half or full-day deep sea fishing or diving charter

Situated on a hidden cove on Antigua’s southwest coast, Hermitage Bay sits on 16 acres of lush tropical gardens and natural mangroves. Ringed by the Caribbean Sea, views include the islands of Montserrat, St. Kitt’s and Nevis in the distance, as well as luxury yachts anchored in the nearby harbor.

Antigua has 365 beaches—one for every day of the year—so water sports are obviously a big draw. In addition to sailing and fishing, there’s snorkeling, windsurfing and kayaking right on the property. Land lubbers can enjoy a game of golf or hike a trail that begins at the edge of the beach and takes you through the hillside and around the outskirts of the resort.

How to enjoy Antigua

With low humidity, year round sunshine and highs in the mid-eighties, Antigua has quite perfect weather. Add in glorious beaches and plentiful opportunities for play and you have what this island is made of

  • Take a helicopter tour of nearby Montserrat and view the steam clouds and occasional bursts of volcanic activity that put half of this island out of bounds
  • Charter a yacht to find secluded coves for snorkeling or sign the kids up for sailing lessons and fun messing about on the water
  • Unwind and relax in an indulgent spa with sugar cane and botanical oil treatments, classic pedicures and hot stone massages

Whether you are staying on an exclusive private island off the coast of Antigua or nestled into beachside luxury with a private plunge pool, Antigua has an indulgent feel. Your day may be spent at your own pace, lulled gently by the breeze in your beachside hammock, or sport fishing for Marlin and ziplining through the interior’s rainforest.

The island’s genteel English heritage can be seen everywhere from the national sport, cricket, to the beautifully preserved Georgian harbor, Nelson’s Dockyard, (named after the English 18th Century sailor, Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson). A name to learn is Sir Viv Richards. Former captain of the West Indies cricket team and regular defeater of the English, the man is a local legend.
