Why we choose Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

This is an all-villa enclave with amphitheatre views of sky, sea and islands

  • Each villa has an outdoor living space and oversized infinity-edge pool
  • Try your hand at Muay Thai kickboxing, a truly authentic Thai experience, at the private ring with a view
  • Private boats shuttle you to remote beaches and marine life excursions

Even experienced travelers likely have never been to a resort like Four Seasons Koh Samui. For starters, it’s got an away-from-it-all charm that belies how easy it is to get to. And when you’re planning who will accompany you to this dreamy slice of paradise, remember that while they’ve got a phenomenal Kids For All Seasons program that caters to families, everything from the setting to the indoor/outdoor living screams “romance.”

What you need to know about the hotel

White sand, swaying coconut palms and calm waters define the resort, while locals help create a welcoming village atmosphere

  • Resort attendants provide ice water, chilled towels and water spritzes at poolside or on the beach
  • Spa treatments are in individual salas (covered verandas), each with two indoor and outdoor massage beds and outdoor shower and bathtub
  • The unforgettable arrival experience includes the sounding of a ceremonial Thai gong as 20-foot teak doors open to reveal the hilltop view

More like a private home than a guestroom, the spacious and secluded villas offer can’t-look-away views of Laem Yai Bay, the island of Pha Ngan and the Gulf of Siam. Each of the 74 accommodations is either built into the hillside or steps from the beach, and you can choose a one-bedroom villa for vacations à deux or a one- to five-bedroom residence villa for more space.

As you would expect of a Four Seasons property, the amenities are plentiful and first-rate. While away your time playing tennis on two hard courts lit for night play, spending an afternoon in the spa, working out in the fitness center or exploring the water with snorkeling gear or a kayak.

Where is it and what's nearby

The tranquil Thai island of Koh Samui is nestled in a natural amphitheatre facing the Gulf of Siam

  • Fully worth a boat ride, the Angthong National Marine Park is a protected reserve of more than 40 islands with sheer limestone, virgin rainforests and off-shore coral reef
  • From brightly colored fish to exotic coral formations, the Gulf of Thailand has some of the best dive sites in Southeast Asia
  • The Buddhism Experience escorts guests to Wat Phra Yai (home to the golden three-story Big Buddha) and two other temples
  • In the once-in-a-lifetime category: Take an elephant ride to view the island’s most dramatic waterfall

Small but spectacular, Koh Samui is part of an archipelago of more than 60 islands off Thailand’s east coast. Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is located on the island’s northwestern tip, quietly secluded in Laem Yai Bay, with breathtaking views of surrounding islands and its private beach.

This exotic beach hideaway includes elements like a secret bay with blue-green waters and accommodations that spill down a terraced hillside while blending into the coconut palm-dotted landscape. If it sounds like a travel brochure, that’s because there’s no other way to describe this utterly captivating resort. You simply must visit to understand.

How to enjoy Koh Samui and Koh Phangan

Koh Samui has come of age and is no longer the magnet for party-mad backpackers it once was; you'll find serenity, too, on this emerald isle

  • See the golden 40ft Big Buddha Temple. It’s located on a small island off Koh Samui’s north-eastern corner via a causeway
  • For exquisite Thai specialities and Asian fusion cuisine overlooking the turquoise sea and islands that gave it its name, head to the Five Islands Restaurant
  • Koh Samui’s highest waterfall, the 100ft Nam Tok Na Muang lies in the heart of the island, cascading into a pool perfect for swimming

Although not party-mad, these islands are not party-free, and still attract thousands to the world-renowned Full Moon Parties. To join the revellers, head to the south-eastern tip of Koh Phangan. The bars on Haad Rin Rok stay open all night every lunar month, belting out tunes to dance to til dawn. For serenity on this island, head pretty much anywhere else at any other time. Or for a more organised nightclub-style night out with resident and guest DJs, check out the Half Moon parties at Ban Tai Beach.

Charter a boat and explore the 42 islands that together make up the Ang Thong National Marine Park. Only one, Koh Paluay, is inhabited, providing plenty of opportunity for private sunbathing and secluded picnics among the islands’ many hidden white sandy coves. Featuring towering limestone cliffs and impenetrable jungle, alongside waterfalls and lakes, Ang Thong gained notoriety as the location of a secret utopia in Alex Garland’s novel The Beach.

When to visit Koh Samui and Koh Phangan

The dry season lasts from mid-December through April, although to be fair, the wetter months tend to feature quick bursts of rain that wash away the humidity. To catch one of Koh Phangan’s festivals, check out a lunar calendar.
