How to enjoy Delhi

Delhi comes in three versions: Old, New and Ultramodern. New Delhi is a colonial dream of tree-lined boulevards and marble mansions. Old Delhi is grittier with narrow bazaars and the imposing Red Fort

  • Take a day trip to the Taj Mahal. The ‘teardrop on the cheek of time’ was a message of love from Emperor Shah Jahan to his wife
  • The 13th Century red sandstone Qutab Minar is India’s tallest minaret. It’s not possible to climb, but it is still worth a visit
  • Raj Ghat is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and marks the place where he was cremated with a black marble platform and eternal flame

Amid the bustle, dust, noise, bright butterfly-color and yes, the varied aromas of Delhi, there is a peaceful oasis of calm, the Baha’i House of Worship. The lotus-shaped temple itself attracts thousands of visitors a year, but the gardens are a clean, green haven. For the exhilaration of the crammed street markets, Chandni Chowk is a must, but you might need to brace yourself.

New Delhi is not about the technology and shining shopping malls of the more modern elements of the city. It is the elegant symmetry of the Lutyens-designed opulence and home to the presidential palace and the diplomatic quarter. To capture the essence this colonial past, savor an ice cold gin & tonic in the cool atrium of the Imperial Hotel.

    When to visit Delhi

The best time to visit India is between late October and mid-March. Any earlier than October and you risk a solid drenching in the Monsoon and any later than March you will hit regular energy sapping highs of 100°F.
