Why we choose Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

For half a century, Mandarin Oriental has been the premiere address for luxury-seekers in Hong Kong

  • Personalized check-ins and welcome refreshments are standard
  • Two of the seven restaurants are Michelin starred
  • Global wellness treatments include traditional Chinese medicine

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong—the brand’s flagship—set the stage for the upscale collection by debuting its now trademark contemporary-meets-Asian style. The hotel has only gotten better with age, offering dining that doubles as a globe-trotting adventure and a design scheme where every element and restaurant name has a story. For example, The Clipper Lounge pays homage to the golden figurehead on the entrance staircase—originally designed in 1962 for the prow of the clipper sailing ship in the film Billy Budd.

We suggest

Choose a Harbour Room.

What you need to know about the hotel

This urban sanctuary’s biggest draw may be its views of Victoria Harbour and the city’s skyline

  • The Krug Room, one of only two in the world, pairs tasting menus with the largest selection of Krug Champagnes outside France
  • Inspired by world-renowned photographer Lord Lichfield, the Lichfield Suite features photography and mementos from his London studio
  • The three-floor Mandarin spa boasts eight treatment rooms, Chinese herbal steam room, experience showers, Jacuzzi, ice fountain and tea lounge

Mandarin Oriental is the original and enduring luxury icon in Hong Kong. It impresses with tons of antiques and artworks, including the striking Gerard D’a Henderson wall murals. The 501 rooms are outfitted with linen sheets, Hermes bathroom amenities and much-loved Nespresso machines—plus high-tech goodies like interactive entertainment systems and SMART lighting controls.

Outside the rooms are 10 restaurants and bars featuring food from modern French to Cantonese to British favorites. There’s also a holistic spa, indoor pool and 24-hour fitness centre to keep you busy.

Where is it and what's nearby

In Hong Kong’s central district, connected by air-conditioned walkway to premiere business destinations

  • Take the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak for phenomenal city views, or opt for a helicopter tour to gain the ultimate perspective
  • Shoppers take note: Pick up real-deal Asian antiques at Chine Gallery and indulge in custom-made cheongsam dresses at Linva Tailors
  • Check out the diverse artistic offerings—from Ooi Botos Gallery’s photography and video installations to contemporary Chinese pieces at Plum Blossoms

Hong Kong is a modern steel-and-glass city that also embraces the best of tradition. In the midst of this contemporary-yet-timeless oasis—overlooking glittering Victoria Harbour and the city skyline—Mandarin Oriental’s location is both picturesque and convenient. In town for business? The city’s major business areas are within easy walking distance, as are the top shopping, arts and historic areas.

How to enjoy Hong Kong

Hidden temples, crooked alleys and the unmistakable outline of an ancient junk silhouetted against the mirror-finish of a 21st century tower in Victoria Harbour

  • For amazing views of the city and the spectacular Symphony of Lights, where reflected lasers set the water aglow, charter an evening harbor cruise
  • To see the city set out at your feet in all of its glory, head to Hong Kong’s highest point, The Peak. We recommend ascending by The Peak Tram
  • For an intriguing insight into Hong Kong’s ancient Chinese heritage, visit the 500 year old walled village of Kat Hing Wai

To truly make the most of Hong Kong, take yourself to a department store as soon as is humanly possibly after your plane touches down on. We recommend Sogo, Sincere or LCX. There you can buy a beautiful and, more importantly, empty bag ready to be filled with the booty of your trip. Whether shockingly low-priced silks from Stanley Market or the very latest in consumer electronics, Hong Kong is probably the world’s best and most sumptuous bazaar.

For a Hong Kong institution, head to Luk Yu, a colonial-style tea house located downtown where they serve dim sum to die for. And then there is the bespoke tailoring. There are plenty to choose from. Nathan Road is a good place to find one, including the celebrity haunts Sam’s Tailors and Punjab House. They won’t be cheap, but the quality and tradition will make this item a wardrobe favorite.
