Why we choose Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake

The seaside location is pure poetry, and the style and substance of the hotel are second to none

  • The residential-style villas include 24-hour private butler service
  • A year-round indoor pool is decked out with daybeds for lounging
  • Arrival is by boat, floating past temples while sipping tea

The aesthetic is a spectacular blend of Chinese style perfected over thousands of years with a dash of chic, contemporary design. When you combine that with ultra-customized service (which they take very seriously), it’s a hands-down winner for business or pleasure.

What you need to know about the hotel

Resort-like amenities plus Chinese style and service to delight Eastern and Western visitors

  • The Signature Lagoon Suite has a large, open-air terrace and beautiful views of landscaped gardens and picturesque West Lake
  • Ritzy Chinese restaurant Jin Sha’s focus is on private dining, with 11 stand-alone private dining rooms
  • It’s teatime: The spa’s Dragon Well Tea Ritual includes a soak in 60,000 tea leaves and a massage with tea-infused oil

Not just a standout in the area, Four Seasons Hangzhou is arguably one of the best hotels in the entire country. It’s hard to argue with the most spacious accommodations in the city (including three private villas), most of which open to a terrace. But what we really love is the sense of place they’ve created.

There’s no generic luxury here. Instead, the hotel has incorporated a traditional regional style known as Jiang Nan, with a color palette of white walls, black tiles, gray rocks and red columns—all of which is in harmony with the greens, browns and blues of the natural world outside.

Where is it and what's nearby

Your very own lakeside village with great access to top sightseeing spots

  • The concierge can arrange a guided boat tour of the most scenic views in West Lake’s 1,600 acres
  • Tour historic tea houses to experience traditional tea service in ancient style, as well as nearby tea plantations
  • Of Hangzhou’s temples and monasteries, the most renowned is Lingyin Si, featuring China’s largest sitting Buddha (in gold!)

Hangzhou is about 45 minutes from Shanghai on the east coast of China. Its claims to fame include being one of the country’s most beautiful cities (and top places to live), as well as originating Longjing, the green tea that’s often called the national drink of China.

The Four Seasons is perched on the edge of the West Lake area, giving the hotel a remarkable resort-like feeling that’s enhanced by the gardens, ponds, streams and lagoons dotting the property. While here, sit back and enjoy the mountain and lake views or check out the area’s ancient temples and pagodas.

How to enjoy Hangzhou

Immortalised in a song—conveniently with English lyrics—the comparisons to paradise are something you’ll hear a lot in Hangzhou. To be fair, with its shimmering West Lake and stunning architecture, they have a point

  • Hangzhou has been producing world-renowned silk for 5000 years, see its story (and lovely products) at the National Silk Museum
  • For traditional shopping, browse the historic Qinghefang where you will find tobacco, tea, Chinese medicines and plenty of restaurants
  • Try to spend at least one night in Wuzhen. One of China’s ancient water towns, its beautifully lit buildings look especially striking reflected in the dark water at night

Hangzhou, is one of the seven ancient capitals of China and one of the most visited tourist cities in the world. It is popular with Chinese visitors, as well as travellers from overseas, for its natural beauty and awe-inspiring architecture. Must-sees include the ancient Six Harmonies Pagoda and the inspirational Hangzhou Grand Theatre and the New Academy of Art.

At the heart of Hangzhou is West Lake, home to the lovely Three Pools Mirroring the Moon and the zigzagging Nine Turns Bridge. On a full moon night, candles are placed in the lakeside pagodas, creating the illusion of several magical moons in the water.

Try to catch one of West Lake’s Night Shows. With music, dance, opera, acrobatics and stunts, there is plenty to delight and thrill.

    When to visit Hangzhou

West Lake’s lotus flowers bloom in the heat and humidity of July and August. To catch the lovely fall foliage, take your trip in late November and December. The plane trees lining the Beishan Road between Broken Bridge and Xileng Bridge are particularly spectacular at this time of year.

  • We say
