We suggest

Everyone requests the Walker Bay ocean views, but the mountain vistas are equally compelling.

A perfect add-on to your trip to Cape Town.

Where is it and what's nearby

On Walker Bay, a short drive from the old fishing town of Hermanus

  • An hour and a half from Cape Town along the Indian Ocean coastline
  • A popular vacation destination for ‘Capetonians’, close to the southernmost tip of Africa
  • Mountains and ocean divided by the quiet towns of Onrust River and Hermanus

Birkenhead House is located on the outskirts of the town of Hermanus, which is a 90-minute scenic drive from Cape Town. You’ll forget the busy, cosmopolitan vibe of the city as you drive through wild, untamed coastal scenery towards Hermanus. This old fishing village is today a pretty town of quaint shops, open markets, galleries and glorious beaches.

The Western Cape is home to internationally-acclaimed winelands, nature reserves and the Indian Ocean shoreline offers up sightings of the Southern Right Whale.

How to enjoy Rest of South Africa

Every now and then, you come across a nation that seems to have more than its fair share of superlatives. South Africa is, without question, one of these

  • When you hear the whale crier blow his horn in Hermanus, head to the cliff path to spot the Southern Right Whales swimming in the coves below
  • Take the Wine Tram through the Franschhoek Valley for the breath-taking scenery and mouth-watering tasting rooms of the Cape Winelands
  • Get up close and personal with penguins in Betty’s Bay; forgetting to stay in their colony on Stoney Point, the birds wander (waddle) the village at will

Head to the Western Cape’s Winelands and you will find more than your fair share of award-winning restaurants. In Franschhoek, there’s The Tasting Room. Head chef Margot Janse has won numerous awards, including the best restaurant on the continent and deservedly so. In nearby Stellenbosch, at least four restaurants are regularly named among the top ten places to eat out in South Africa, including Jordan and Overture.

In addition to being one of South Africa’s oldest towns, Franschhoek can also claim the nation’s first properly engineered road and oldest ‘in use’ bridge at Jan Joubert’s Gat. The Franschhoek Pass was engineered in 1822 by the Royal Africa Corps and is worth a drive for its fantastic views over the valley wineries and snow peaked mountains. More superlatives can be found in nearby Hermanus. This Western Cape charming seaside resort is famed for being the ‘best land-based whale-watching destination in the world’.

When to visit Rest of South Africa

In recognition of its French settler roots, Bastille Day (July 14) is celebrated every year in Franschhoek. The Synergy Live music festival (one of the biggest outdoor music festivals in South Africa), takes place at the Theewaterskloof Dam on the last weekend of November or the first weekend of December.

  • We say

Whale watch from the comfort of your bed! Now that’s a view.

  • A word from the hotel

You must try the welcome drink, with cassis caviar!
