How to enjoy Kruger

There is no where quite like a safari park to bring together the past and the present. Echoes of a bygone age where big game hunting was the elite sport of choice hang in the air, replaced today by the whirr of a telephoto zoom

  • See the bushveld from a hot air balloon. Enjoy a Bustard’s-eye view of grazing antelope or zebra and curiously-shaped baobab trees
  • Savor a bush braai. This South African barbecue, usually sizzling over a fire-pit, grills local specialities such as the spiced sausage, boerewors
  • After a day or more spent in the heat and dust of the bush, refresh yourself amid the indulgent luxury of a spa or idle laps of a cool pool

The Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest game reserves, stretching more than two hundred miles north to south and over 40 miles across. The Big Five, that is to say the five most difficult game animals to hunt on foot, can all be found in the park: elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino. With luck you will catch sight of giraffe, zebra, hippos and wildebeest too.

Explore the park by whatever method most appeals. There are plenty of opportunities for trekking, 4WD vehicles and even elephant-back tours. In addition to bird watching, big and little game spotting and just soaking up the thrill of the African bush, you can enjoy cultural highlights. Visit the 15th century archaeological remains at Thulamela Hill and see the stone age artifacts uncovered at the Masorini Heritage Site.

    When to visit Kruger

The Kruger Park is a year round destination. Game viewing can be at its best during the dry winter months when the vegetation is less dense and less likely to hide animals. That said, the summer rainy season fills waterholes (excellent viewing galleries), shows off newborn and baby wildlife and welcomes the season’s migrant birds.
