How to enjoy Johannesburg

The blood-chilling roar of lions, audible in the dead of night from the heart of the metropolis, will remind you that Johannesburg artfully links together the many different faces that make up the best of Africa

  • The Sterkfontein World Heritage site and the Cradle of Humankind are about an hour from Jo’burg and thought to be the place where mankind originated
  • Enjoy a glimpse into the cultures of local tribes Zulu, Ndebele, Basotho, Pedi and Xhosa at the Lesedi Cultural Village
  • Climb to the top of Africa’s tallest building, the rather brutal looking Carlton Centre, to enjoy panoramic views of Johannesburg and the bushveld beyond

At its core, Johannesburg is a modern and utterly cosmopolitan city. It offers stunning shopping; check out the international designer boutique at Sandton City, local designer labels such as Black Coffee and the labels of the future at the Young Designers Emporium. The nightlife offers plenty of opportunities to dance-til-dawn (Catz Pyjamas and the Manhattan Club) or sit back and savor world class cuisine (Auberge Michel or any of the elegant restaurants surrounding Nelson Mandela Square).

The city is home to Nelson Mandela. An office of the former president and anti-apartheid campaigner is now a museum and the city’s iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge is said to depict his bridging of South Africa’s black and white communities. However just outside the city limits you will find Africa’s great outdoors in all its glory. Lion Park will give you plenty of up close and personal opportunities with large kitties and the Kruger Game Reserve is just a hop, skip and a jump away.
