Why we choose The Oyster Box

Fine dining, ocean views and world-class facilities

  • The sunken Wine Cellar is ideal for intimate meals
  • Dig into freshly-plucked oysters from the hotel’s own beds
  • The Oyster Box hosted the post-wedding party for Prince Albert of Monaco

Some hotels drop you in the middle of a frenetic city and say, “Go!” The Oyster Box takes the opposite approach, asking you to put your watch away and take life at their pace. In a word, relax. But rest assured that if trying to relax is stressing you out, the hotel is just 15 minutes from the Durban city center.

Once you’ve slowed down enough, you’ll be charmed by its beachside location and beautiful gardens.

What you need to know about the hotel

Private and secluded, the Oyster Box is a gateway to both serenity and adventure

  • A 24-seat cinema screens classic and contemporary films while handing out treats like popcorn, sweets and hot chocolate
  • The spa, among only five Leading Spas in Africa, celebrates the area’s rich Colonial-Afro-Indian culture in its treatments and products
  • Both heated pools are spectacular; one is an ocean-facing infinity pool, and the other is set in the quiet tropical gardens

The Oyster Box’s design aesthetic comes from two things: its ocean’s edge location and the original splendor of its 1940s construction. Recent renovations focused on preserving the Colonial charm through the retention of tiles, murals, paintings and antique furnishings. Throughout the 86 posh rooms, suites and villas you’ll also find natural stone and timber, which bring a bit of the outside in. In fact, the hotel often feels more Mediterranean than African, thanks to a fresh white color scheme and its iconic black-and-white checkerboard floor.

The look is nice, but what brings people to the hotel—besides its location—are the amenities. The Oyster Box has six extraordinary restaurants and bars, as well as a top-tier spa that’s been recognized as one of the best on the entire continent.

Where is it and what's nearby

A five-star beachside getaway on South Africa’s eastern coast

  • Durban Botanic Gardens contain spectacular collections of sub-tropical trees, palms and orchids, as well as a wide variety of colourful birds
  • Nearby Thanda Private Game Reserve is a premier “Big Five” safari destination where you’ll come face-to-snout with lions and rhinos
  • Stunning beaches, superb diving and snorkeling and maybe a leatherback turtle sighting—Rocktail Bay is among the country’s top attractions

The Oyster Box offers the best of all worlds: It’s got indigenous gardens on one side of the property, the warm Indian Ocean on the other and is a five-minute walk to the Umhlanga Village Centre.

The direct access to miles of protected swimming areas and beautiful beaches—plus 180-degree views of the coastline—is hard to beat, but the hotel is also a great jumping off point for all kinds of attractions. The cosmopolitan city of Durban is 15 minutes away, while nature lovers may want to check out Ushaka Marine World, the Drakensberg Mountains or game parks. There’s no golf in the immediate area, but some of South Africa’s best fairways are within a pretty short drive.

How to enjoy Durban

Durban is inescapably a seafront city, with South Africa’s busiest port at its center and miles of golden sand beaches stretching out on either side. Blessed with a subtropical climate and warm seas, you’re as likely to see an Arctic Tern as you are a surfer in a wetsuit

  • Explore the caves and escarpments of the Drakensberg mountains to see some of the thousands of ancient San rock paintings to be found there
  • Enjoy world class golf at the championship links, Durban Country Club, a favorite of South African golfer Ernie Els
  • Take the boardwalk into the heart of the Beechwood Mangroves for chance to catch sight of the extraordinary ‘walking’ fish, the Mudskipper

One of Durban’s most charming areas and an absolute must on any itinerary is Umhlanga. You could quite easily spend long, cloudless days lounging on the golden beach, punctuated by the odd dip in the sea or the reapplication of sun screen. As eveningfalls,do as the locals do and sip chilled drinks on a colonial verandah or take a leisurely stroll along the seafront promenade.

Explore the area’s wildlife at Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. The dune forests and reed beds are home to monkeys and several species of birds. For nature with teeth, take an early morning boat trip the see the shark nets being cleared. If all this fresh air leaves you feeling hungry, visit the Oyster Box for lunch or dinner. The less formal Ocean Terrace has spectacular sea views (not to mention lighthouse) and offers a curry buffet that enjoys a far-reaching reputation.

    When to visit Durban

Although undoubtedly a year-round destination, Durban is famed for a perfect winter sun location, with the warmest months being from November to March. These tend to be the wettest months too, though the rain tends to shortlived when it does come.

  • We say

    It’s the best hotel around.

  • Must do

Make sure you book a table in the Grill Room in plenty of time or you’ll flounder on the waiting list.
