Why we choose Twelve Apostles

Magnificent sea and mountain views from within a World Heritage Site

  • All 70 rooms and suites have a patio
  • Outdoor star-gazing facilities
  • The hotel’s helipad makes it an eight-minute flight to Cape Town

The Twelve Apostles is as unique as its name. It caters to well-traveled visitors who’ve probably seen and done it all—until now. Condé Nast readers recently voted it among the best places to stay in the world, and its well-deserved reputation for generous hospitality and passionate service is undoubtedly one of the main reasons.

We suggest

We love the ocean views of the Sea Facing Suites.

What you need to know about the hotel

The Twelve Apostles feels like it’s perched at the edge of the world, making it a true escape from the everyday

  • The award-winning spa has seven treatment rooms, two private outdoor gazebos plus families like the brine pool and cold plunge pool
  • An intimate, 16-seat cinema shows new movies every month—or choose your own, along with an assortment of goodies
  • Tea-by-the-Sea, in the Leopard Bar or the Conservatory, is afternoon tea with all the trimmings plus incredible sea and mountain views

Though it’s called a hotel, Twelve Apostles is more like a resort, with one unique amenity after another. Originally an old hunting lodge, it’s maintained a rustic charm while also incorporating a decided European influence, resulting in a simple yet sophisticated vibe. What we love best about the hotel is that it’s family run—a detail that shows through in the service and little touches that make a big difference. No wonder this place has such a long list of loyal customers!

Where is it and what's nearby

An idyllic location outside of Cape Town between a national park and the Atlantic Ocean

  • Explore the hiking trails around Table Mountain National Park, and then stop for a picnic created by the hotel
  • Tourist attractions, shops and restaurant are just a few reasons the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is South Africa’s most popular destination
  • The southernmost point of the African continent, Cape Point offers beaches as well as zebras, reptiles and small mammals

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa is named for the line of mountains rising majestically on one side of the property. On the other side is the Atlantic Ocean Marine Park, where the sun glints off breeching whales and playful dolphins. Not bad, huh? Oh, and then there are the miles of flowered wilderness trails of the Table Mountain National Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. So incredible is the natural beauty here that Table Mountain has recently gained New 7 Wonders of Nature status.

Though it seems removed from Cape Town by thousands of miles, it’s actually not that far into the city, where you can shop along the waterfront, check out Long Street’s eclectic buzz and investigate the hundreds of museums and galleries.

How to enjoy Cape Town

You may see wild zebra grazing nonchalantly on the slopes of the skyline-dominating Table Mountain, yet somehow this doesn’t take away from the all-pervading chic of this stylish beach and party city, but simply adds to Cape Town’s exotic allure

  • Check out the local talent. Home grown designer labels including Errol Arendz and Sheray Bakos can be found on or near Long Street
  • Catch the sun in style – protected from the wind if not the chilly water – at the exclusive residential beach area of Clifton
  • Shell fish, white bait, fresh catch of the day, the colorful fishing village of Kalk Bay is well worth a trip for lunch; quirky boutiques promise one-of-a-kind finds

Vertigo is no excuse. The views of and from Table Mountain are so epic – and so completely define Cape Town – that they are well worth the fear. One of the best ways up is with a private guide. They’ll fill you in on the various flora and fauna on the way and then point out the sights from the top. Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, Robben Island. Bloubergstrand. Then ride the cable car down. If the fear thing does apply to you, you may want to miss this on a windy day.

Another stunning view of this Mayan pyramid-shaped mountain is from the sea. Charter a sunset cruise for amazing sights: champagne a must. Depending on the time of year, you may see penguins, dolphins, whales and sharks on this trip too. Nearby Stellenbosch is famed for fine wine and exceptional restaurants. Stellenzicht, Rustenberg and Veenwouden are particularly notable estates and well worth a tasting trip.

The Kirstenbosch gardens host Sundowner Concerts every Sunday evening between December and April. Take a picnic, enjoy the views and chill to the sounds of some of South Africa’s best musicians. The line ups range from jazz to classical to folk, rock and pop.

  • We say

The spa facilities are good enough to be the reason to book a few days here.

  • Awards and accolades

Twelve Apostles has earned a place in Condé Nast Traveler’s Platinum Circle, having featured in the Gold List for five years in a row.
