How to enjoy Seychelles

It is easy to see why newly-wed British Royals Will and Kate chose the Seychelles for their honeymoon. This archipelago of 115 islands offers a perfect getaway. Unrelentingly relaxing and romantic, it regularly tops the world’s best beaches lists

  • Enjoy the flamingo-pink sands of Anse Source d’Argent on the island of La Digue; it has been repeatedly voted best beach in the world
  • Charter a yacht to go island hopping. There are plenty of deserted islands and secluded bays that make for perfect picnic destinations
  • The best shopping is to be found in the islands’ capital, Victoria on Mahé. Seek out original art and local handmade crafts

It is not just the beach accolades that sets this island chain apart. The Seychelles are also home to some of the world’s rarest species including the Black Paradise Flycatcher, Black Parrot and the rather erotically-shaped nut, the Coco de Mer. As you lie back in peaceful gardens, looking out over a deserted, perfect beach, the plants that surround you may include the rare vanilla orchid or endangered Jellyfish tree.

What’s not rare on these islands is the sense of peace, fun and environmentalism that abound. Take the golf driving range at the exclusive Four Seasons resort on the lovely island of Mahé. Golfers take their basket of balls to the beach at dusk. Distance markers are placed in the ocean against which each shot can be marked. The biodegradable balls are filled with fish food. Everyone is happy.

    When to visit Seychelles

The Seychelles’ climate is pretty perfect. The temperature largely stays between the high 70s and high 80s, making it a great year-round vacation destination. In January watch or take part in the pro-am Seychelles Sailing Cup. In October is the Festival Kreol. Dubbed the ‘most important event in Seychelles’ by the Tourist Board, it celebrates the colours, sounds, flavours and fragrances of Creole culture.
